I wanted to like this place, sadly it left a bad taste in my mouth. I'm visiting Phoenix to see one of my grown kids. We went to Churchill and I heard the burgers were great so I placed an order on Stoop Kid. Their website says they make burgers. I clicked on the menus sub menu titled BURGERS thinking I was ordering a burger. Sadly it's very misleading. What you are ordering is a grilled cheese that you can add a burger patty to for an additional $2. This would be find of the menu said add a burger to your grilled cheese, but the menu TITLE says burgers. There for I thought I was ordering a burger, not the case at all. What made it worse is the menu doesn't tell you are ordering a grilled cheese and that you need to select a patty, it says the burger patties are add ons. With a menu header of burger, one thinks that adding a patty is adding an additional patty. Not turning a grilled cheese into a burger. The menu is very misleading and not amusing. To add insult to injury, I would have just added a patty if the service hadn't been awful. The workers looked at me like I had 10 heads as if anyone should know they are ordering a grilled cheese and must add a burger patty.. save for the fact that the place I'd marketed as being a burger place and the menu header says BURGERS. I handed my item back and because the ladies were rude I opted for a refund, which has no yet been processed to my card. I'd like someone to tell me why the menu header says I'm ordering a burger if it's really a grilled cheese I can opt to add...
Read moreBeen wanting to try this place for years! Its surprisingly hard to find a place that does an actual smash burger correctly, rather than just a thick malformed patty.
For that I give the food a 5, but I was in between a 4 and 4.5 honestly. The patty itself, which has beautiful lacing that falls out of the bun, doesn't have enough seasoning. It really relies on the toppings (luckily are delicious). But the lacey patty parts solo are really just providing that crunchy, mild beef flavor. And the cheese/sauce felt like it was only on 2/3 of the bun. My first couple bites were just burger, pickle, and bun.
Meanwhile the hash brown I got was insanely seasoned. Personally just a slight bit more than I'd prefer, but I love salt. I can imagine most people complaining about it. I enjoyed it though, despite it lingering heavy.
Back to the burger toppings, I got the stoop burger, gotta try to og first. The sharp pickles, sauce, and onions really combine to make a great flavor. And when you add the soft bun and get the thin, crispy plus just thick juicy part of the burger, it really is great.
Atmosphere is subjective. I wasn't expecting it to be in a food hall. Had I known the wait time, I would have maybe felt more comfortable to go get a drink without missing my order.
Overall I really want to try another burger type, and their bagels look really good.
This is realistically a 4.5, but because of the reasons above I can't reach a 5. But I'd be willing to try again...
Read moreOrdered the decaf veggie burger, curly fries, mac and cheese balls, tater tots, and a hash brown.
Decaf burger included sauces/ingredients were not my favorite. By the time I took everything out or on the side, the burger was dry. I had to douse it in ketchup, which is OK and that's what I normally do, but the ketchup came in small, hard to open packets and just made it frustrating to eat the burger. I would not reorder unless it was easier to get access to condiments. I would also add more of the diced pickles that came in the burger.
The tater tots and curly fries were mediocre. I would not reorder. The hash brown was really good. I would reorder. The mac and cheese balls had a little kick and tasted as expected. I would consider reordering.
The music was good but loud around 7:30 pm on a Saturday night. It was hard to have a conversation. Plenty of seating. We had never been to Churchill and it looked cool from the photos. Definitely check it for the vibe at minimum.
Kids under 21 do need to leave when finishing their food by 8 pm as it turns into a 21+ space between 8 to 9 pm.
We don't frequent downtown Phoenix much, so we were not sure if there is free parking anywhere nearby, but we found some paid meter parking and there were many paid...
