Read moreI dine monthly with a group and have been doing so for several years. Last night at La Platea was the worst experience ever. Despite the fact a member of our group that dines there regularly informed La Platea in advance that a group of 20-30 was coming at 6, La Platea apparently wasn't ready. We arrived at 6pm and the doors were locked forcing several of us to stay outside in the notorious So. Fla. Heat & Humidity. After several minutes, they allowed us in to the vestibule area however, we had to wait while they cleared an area for us.
Then there was an issue with payment which caused about a 30-40 minute delay in food being served. Again, they were told beforehand that we would pay individually but La Platea wanted 5 of us to submit credit cards for the entire group. After payment was satisfied, we finally got around to placing orders. Mind you, we are now well over an hour since we arrived at 6. Several of us placed orders but the appetizers arrived in piecemeal fashion. I never received a salad I ordered however, a young lady I dine with was served hers. Fortunately, La Platea serves LARGE portions and she SHARED her salad with us as we were 90 minutes in and several in my group were beginning to get HANGRY. I was served an incredibly delicious glass or Merlot that may have been the best I've ever had IF I had the opportunity to pair it with the NY Strip that I ordered but was never served. About 2 hours in, I asked the waiter for the status of my salad, he looked startled and asked, "Did you order a salad?" He then checked & returned to tell me, "Your salad comes with your meal".
It was at this time I began to realize something was amiss. La Platea was simply not ready to address our large group. I also saw various patrons walking in, & being seated & served immediately. I gave La Platea several additional minutes and NOTHING. 2 hours 15 minutes in and I became so hungry that I walked over to the Pinecrest Bakery and ordered 2 Chicken Croquettes just to satiate my hunger. I returned to see many in my group still waiting for their meals. I asked to speak to Management and told them I was ready to leave. I was comped my Glass of wine but regardless, I PAID them for it because I don't want anything FREE.
I simply want to be treated fairly and last night my group was not as they also left because they were not served the food they ordered. The salad I ate was great. The Wine was OUTSTANDING. The atmosphere awesome.
The service at La Platea left me with a...
Read moreI really wanted to love this place. I mean, steak… ceviche? What could be better? It’s nearby and new. I had to try it.
Well… TL;DR Don’t order the Benedict on Sunday.
Story time…
Got together with the ex in-laws and popped in for brunch, my treat! They ordered ceviche and some oysters. I ordered the Santo Benedicto, a Benedict with salmon. The waitstaff was swift and professional. Order done, mimosa inbound.
The oysters and ceviche came out first. I was ok waiting… in hindsight, I should have questioned, but I didn’t.
When I got the Benedict, I was impressed. Two hollandaise-covered stacks with a heaping mound of greens between them. I dipped my finger and quickly tasted the sauce. Perfection. I was excited… until I cut into the first stack.
Runny egg-yolk wasn’t the only thing spilling out. I got that feeling I was dealing with an undercooked poached egg right away, though years of being a baby about such things kept me from complaining. After finishing the first half of the Benedict, however, I saw what I was leaving behind… mostly egg whites, and what I HAD eaten was REALLY overcooked salmon. I had a bite of the salad… oil-covered greens. No flavor.
At that point, I placed my knife and fork down, parallel on the plate. The waitstaff was coming around and asked about the meal. I answered honestly. Overcooked salmon, undercooked poached egg and carefully swiped the hollandaise off the very top of the second stack, revealing an egg that we could see the yolk of, through barely white albumen. It was almost completely transparent.
The waitstaff and management took care of the issue right away. I have no issue with them, whatsoever The food? No… it actually made me mad.
You can cook a piece of salmon, poach an egg, and toast an English muffin in about the same amount of time… why did I get such an uncomposed dish? I’m going to chalk it up to a bad day on the hot-line.
The in-laws where “meh” with their ceviche. Last straw for me. I decided to write a review - not about the front of the house, they are great and filling their positions admirably… back of the house, not so much.
I would suggest hiring a good chef, one to oversee the mess on Sunday.
I will not return. Expensive mistake, even if my...
