This is a tough review for me because the food was tasty, the service was excellent (they did prepare the wrong thing for my wife but she is too timid to say anything) but what she got instead she did enjoy. The inside has plenty of seating and they have outdoor seating as well. I also like this location because it's close to Oakland but not where all the Pitt students are.
So why the three star review then? The price you are paying compared to the size of the sandwich you get is out of balance. I ordered the number one expecting a triple decker to be decently sized but it just wasn't. It was in line with a single sized sandwich at primanti brothers which I only mention because everyone in Pittsburgh has had one of their sandwiches so you will understand the size I'm referring to. I would say the New Yorker primanti brothers offers is extremely close to what the number 1 here is like but it's cheaper and you get a much bigger sandwich so while the sandwich was good they run small. Now I understand this is a small deli and certainly would not have the bulk buying power of primanti brothers so I understand the price difference but if it were me I wouldn't call it a triple decker even though it has three slices of bread. Triple decker makes it sound like it will be a big sandwich when it's not.
Now if you opt instead for one of their gravy options such as the beef or meatloaf then you are getting a pretty good deal. I ordered that for take out to have for dinner and that definitely filled me up because of the heavy starch from the fries, the thick gravy, the bread and a nice chunk of beef.
I will also say the mish mash soup I got was really loaded up, definitely more content then broth so again that is a pretty decent offering too.
So you got a mix of the good and the not so great which leaves this at a balanced 3 star for me. Would I go back? Yes and I will but knowing what I know now I'll stick to the options that we're good value for money and not order what I thought wasn't so good.
It's definitely worth a stop if you are in the area and want a sandwich that, while small, is a good all around sandwich. If you get one of the soups, and you definitely should, you won't be disappointed. The roast beef and gravy would also be a dish you will enjoy. I...
Read moreThis deli has very good food at reasonable prices but the owner has a terrible attitude. He recently instituted a credit card fee which previously didn’t exist. When I suggested he just include it in the cost of his product, he snapped at me that everyone is doing it which is not accurate. ( In his neighborhood alone, Butterjoint, Union Grill, and Ali Baba—- all a block away—- do not charge credit card fees.) I mentioned politely that he doesn’t have an add on for rent, heat, insurance. They are just the cost of doing business. He replied in a surly way that I did not have to come in. I think I will take him up on his suggestion and sorry I didn’t do it that day. I do not mind paying a fair price for my order. I do mind being treated rudely.
Response of owner indicates that he really doesn’t care what his customers think. Not a great way to...
Read moreMy wife and I came into the Burgh for a family celebration. I was charged with the catering detail. Why not put an out of state family member from New York in charge of the most important detail. So many establishments to choose from. We we hit the nail on the Boarshead in selecting “Food for Thought”. We had a deli/sandwich/salad spread for 30. We were supplied with everything we needed to unload and dig in. Bob understood our needs and delivered. Not to the house per se, although I believe they would have! We arrived ahead of schedule and willingly scarfed a couple of breakfast Sammy’s to boot. I would highly recommend Food for Thought for your “deli style” catering event or catch a bite on premises. The place is clean, busy and the friendly staff is welcoming & anxious to help! I do love that when it comes to...
