I end up coming here a lot since it's the local bakery/coffee shop. The vegetarian selection is good, but there are basically no vegan options. They sell the same things day-to-day for the most part, with limited stuff every now and then. When they have it, their blueberry muffins are incredible. They have a meaty and vegetarian option for both breakfast sandwiches and hand pies. Both the vegetarian sandwiches and hand pies are delightful.
For vegan coffee drinks, they make their own oat milk in-house. I would say it's closer to a skim milk in richness than a whole milk, so keep that in mind if you plan to order an espresso drink. Their cold brew is also very good, and if you are fine drinking dairy then I highly recommend the princess cold brew. It is similar to and inspired by Vietnamese iced coffee as it contains sweetened condensed milk.
They also sell loaves of Japanese milk bread (shokupan) every day, and I believe that is the bread they use for the sandwiches. Keep in mind that these loaves are not very large, so if you are trying to make a Japanese-style sandwich with them, the portions will be small. On Fridays they sell an all-day loaf which I believe is sourdough. I recall liking it but it's been a while since I have bought it.
Sidecar used to be known as Pie For Breakfast and had a larger selection of pies. They still have vinegar pie slices which I definitely recommend, and very rarely they will bring back their miniature pies on the run.
It's worth mentioning that they have two gender-neutral bathrooms. One has a urinal. So just use whatever you feel like. Finally, a drink and food item will typically cost you between $6...
Read moreGreat toasted breakfast sandwich with piping hot coffee. I wish mustard was available, but maybe i could have simply asked for it. The pickle on my gruyere with ham is clutch. By the way, the coffee is rockin' some very sturdy but mild, naturally sweet flavors, a robust cup of mojo being served here!
Very pleasant and friendly staff - super chill 😎 low stress. They greet each customer with a welcoming smile and eye contact, like old friends just walked into their kitchen through the back door.
The whole space smells like fresh bread - probably because folks are churning out loaves and leaves of fresh baked breads just a few feet from my seat at the window.
Some people are camped out with laptops. Some grab and go. Some are chatting over food with friends.
I have no inclination to try vinegar pie for breakfast, but more than half of the pie was gone, so maybe I am missing out on something truly wonderful. Lots of other appealing choices here, I will have...
Read moreBeen in Oakland for a few years and Sidecar is my go-to cafe for myself and to meet up with friends. The food is phenomenal, their baked goods are perfection, and the drinks are delicious. Special shout out to the barista Em for making some of the best coffees I’ve ever had and always having great drink recommendations and such cheerful, professional customer service. The entire place is decorated so cutely with their signature mugs and wall art (please start selling the mugs!) and their iconic mirror wall. I recommend Sidecar whenever a friend mentions they want to get coffee, and I always recommend the Pittsburgh Smog tea and...
