Probably closer to a 4.5 but I will happily round up.
I was a very regular customer when I still lived in Plano. Ft Worth would be very lucky to have a Mumtaz location. The two buffets we have are meh (Maharaja) and bad (Bombay Grill).
First off, when judging this place, remember that a buffet is a buffet and you will do better getting an entree cooked to order. That said, as far as Indian buffets go, you won't find better (the late Chettinad Palace was it's only true rival).
Protip, don't skip the soup. Their Madras soup is great. Kids in particular love it. (it is a tomato coconut soup) My kid loved it so much that as a toddler he would just tell us pink soup to say he wanted it.
The meat dishes are solid... as others have said the Tandoori Chicken is not dried out at all, and the meats never feel rubbery as I often find. On the veggie end the Chana Masala actually has a bit of heat, the Saag Paneer is excellent and the Dal Makhani is probably my favorite buffet item ever. Food is frequently refreshed and changed out (usually 2-3 times a visit).
Finally, the service is great. It was fine at first, but once we became regulars (even at only 3-4 times a month) the staff recognized us and treated us like family. We started bringing our kid in when he was probably 2 and he immediately fell in love with the Madras soup. The staff were so taken by how into it he was that they brought us a very large take out cup to go for him when we were done at no extra cost. (They wouldn't even let us pay for him for a couple of years). We became so enamored with one waitress that when we learned she was going on maternity leave we brought her a shower gift...
If you are looking for an Indian buffet in Plano, this is your place. No disrespect to Irivat (which does a pretty solid Thali ), or Maharaja or the others, this is the choice... Of course the menu choices are better but for a buffet...
Read moreOur normal Indian restaurant that we go to was closed today, but I was having a serious craving. This place was conveniently on our way home so I decided to go for it.
We didn't dine in; I ordered ahead on the website and we picked it up on our way back home. But the people who helped me tonight were really nice, and I'd love to eat there in person sometime. It had a really nice atmosphere.
To put it simply, the food was incredible. My husband, who's picky about his chicken tikka masala, said the stuff from this place was "very similar to the other restaurant" in our old town that we often frequented before we moved to Plano. And him saying that is equivalent to a rave. He ordered the "mild" spice level (poor thing grew up with parents from the Midwest, what do you expect), and he said that it wasn't too spicy for him at all and that it was really creamy and very good.
My chicken biryani was pretty good as well. There is supposed to be a lot of flavor to biryani (the ultimate test at patience and good cooking, in my opinion), and they did such a great job with it. The chicken was fantastic and the rice was cooked well. It had just the right balance of spices. They also give you a ton of food here, and I can see myself eating on my leftovers for the next three days. The raita was delicious, the food was delicious, everything was so delicious!!
Lastly, we ordered naan, because I'm incapable of saying no to it, and I have never met a naan I didn't like. But I swear to God, the naan that I tasted tonight was some of the best naan I've ever had in my entire life. And I have eaten a lot of naan, friends. I am very much looking forward to adding this place to our normal rotation of takeout places.
Tl;dr: this place has really good food, and they're really nice people, and they deserve more than four stars on Google reviews! AND FOR GOD'S SAKE ORDER THE...
Read moreMy wife and I have had the pleasure of dining at Mumtaz Indian Restaurant multiple times, and each visit has been nothing short of amazing. What sets Mumtaz apart for us is the consistency and quality of their food; it's the only place we've found where we can order the same dish every day and it's just as perfect and delicious as the first time we tried it. The dining atmosphere is equally impressive, offering a welcoming vibe that enhances the overall experience.
We particularly enjoyed their lunch buffet, which not only provided a fantastic selection of dishes but also offered incredible value. Where you might pay around $16 per plate elsewhere, Mumtaz's buffet allows you to enjoy a variety of dishes for just $13. The staff went above and beyond to ensure we were comfortable with our seating and continuously checked in to make sure everything was to our liking. Their friendliness and hospitality significantly contributed to our enjoyable experience.
An unexpected benefit was the quiet atmosphere inside the restaurant, which allowed our son to sleep peacefully throughout our meal. This attention to a comfortable and serene dining environment is something we deeply appreciated.
The Biryani at Mumtaz is a must-try; it's exceptional and a testament to the culinary prowess of the kitchen. Overall, Mumtaz Indian Restaurant has earned a special place in our hearts, and we eagerly look forward to our next meal here. I wholeheartedly recommend Mumtaz to anyone looking for outstanding Indian cuisine coupled with a great dining experience. We plan to keep coming back for as...
