—— Critics Review ——- Go!!! Blew me away!! I’ve heard about this place for over a year… but it’s a bit of a drive for me - and totally worth it! I’ll be a regular now. Awesome experience at every turn!!
Highend Whiskies & Bourbons: Build your own flight: 4 bourbons out of 5 pages of selections. Awesome!!!
My picks: I only saw 1 I wanted to try that I didn’t remember….
Larceny Interesting. Has a somewhat enjoyable flavor at the start, but as it lingers in the pallet, it dissipates fast. Very light on the flavor profile almost muted. No heat in the pallet. Gentle burn in the finish. Boring. (3 out of 10)
The manager (Andre - great guy!) came over initially to help me make selections. I told him what I like (low proof, flavor forward, corn / bit sweeter or wheat). And asked him to pick the other 3.
Hancocks Reserve Excellent. Beautiful flavor profile with a few unique aspects. Balanced. Gentle warming, smooth finish. 9 out of 10.
Baker’s 7yr Absolutely delicious. Has a hint of sweetness on the nose, but not on the pallet. Very warm going down however it has a good bit of heat in the finish (upper 90’s). 7 out of 10.
Kings Country (NY) Almost enjoyable, but the flavors are off. Has absolutely no heat of any kind. Not in the palette or the finish - zero heat. (Yuck) 0 out of 10.
Andre came back later and asked how I liked everything. I let him read my notes and strangely he apologized for the 2 I didn’t like. I told him it’s ok - I enjoyed trying everything.
About 10 minutes later he surprised me with a new sample and would not tell me what it was. He and the bartenders had been tasting samples to find something I would love. (Incredible VIP service to a nobody 1st timer.)
It blew me away!!!
Mellow Corn Best of the group! Incredibly wonderful flavors that morph and change in the pallet during the finish. Barely detectable heat on the pallet, and a gentle warming in the finish. Absolutely enjoyable. 10 out of 10. (A mash of at least 80 percent corn and aged for four years in a once-used Bourbon barrel. 100 proof, drinks like 80 proof.) Totally ugly label from 1945. GET ONE!! I am!!
Food: Excellent!
THE DUTCH: Slow braised beef brisket, smoked gouda, caramelized onions & peppers, garlic aioli, bolillo roll. BLEW ME AWAY!! Was 10x better than I expected and I loved it. No brainer - 10 out of 10!
Fries: Super salty. Next time I’ll ask for no salt. I asked for extra crispy (to snap and be crunchy)… but they were normal and almost limpy. They tasted ok but not for me.
Ketchup = gross / more like cocktail sauce for chilled shrimp. (0 out of 10.) I asked for regular ketchup, which they have - and it helped mask the salt and made it more enjoyable. (Definitely ask for normal ketchup!!)
Fish & Chips: Excellent. Large portion and perfectly cooked. Crunchy, fully cooked and very moist. 10 out of 10.
Server = Emma: Definitely ask for a table in her section. Very happy and it’s her mission to be sure you are more than pleased. We asked for salt and ketchup… but it was a packed day and she forgot. As she passed by, she glanced at us and realized she had forgotten. I observed her going around the corner beating herself up for forgetting. I was so impressed with her response I complimented her on it and still gave 20% tip (no penalty!) I’ll wait 30 minutes to be in her section next time. She is the best!
Manager = Andre A true professional in the food business. I observed him with staff and others. If I owned a restaurant - I would steal him away! Please say hi if you see him.
Atmosphere: Perfect. I could hang out there for hours and not even realize it. No one rushed us out on a packed day, it was a gentle pace of service and we had to ask for the check - which to me is the best of the best in practice. (I hate when I’m given a bill before we are ready to leave - tells me ‘time is up - get out!’)
Overall: 10 out of 10…. And I don’t give that often (as you followers know). I am telling my personal friends to go - and with me so I can introduce them to Emma & Andre.
Can’t...
Read moreToday we “left the island” and ventured beyond the beautiful borders of Rockwallian territory our into the great unknown void known as “Plano”. There, a whole host of obscure and unknown treasures await any of us brave enough to make the 25 minute journey beyond the pristine, beautiful and lawful land known as Rockwall County.
Today’s adventure took us to “Whiskey Cake Plano”, an eatery so famous it has amassed more than 2,300 reviews on Yelp!!!! That’s more than Samee’s, Sessions, Standard Service, Fatted Calf and Bin 303 combined, and DOUBLED.
What could possible be so remarkable?
The restaurant is famous for its farm to table concept, ultra fresh food, live wood fire and hydroponic garden. Also the food is very very good.
We made a wise decision to go at 3:30 on a Sunday afternoon which is probably the only time you could walk in there and get a seat without a wait. The restaurant was modern and vintage at the same time with things like exposed brick and Edison bulbs decorating the place. Very hip. A cool spot.
I couldn’t believe that they have a brunch menu that they ordered until 4 PM but since we were there so close to the cut off they went ahead and gave us dinner menus which we chose to order off instead. I’m sure breakfast would’ve been wonderful.
We started off with jalapeño cheddar drop biscuits and their fried green tomatoes both which I found to be exceptional. The batter on the fried green tomatoes what is tempura perfect and I don’t know what sort of sauce it was but I complemented it perfectly. The jalapeño cheddar biscuits or something like you would get at red lobster but on a whole Nother dimension with the jalapeño and the dipping gravy they include. Phenomenal.
Ashley ordered some sort of salad so I don’t know anything about that but I got the sirloin steak and fingerling potatoes and found the potatoes to be especially remarkable. They had some sort of lime butter drizzle on them and they were crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside like some sort of magical baked potato baby. My steak was overcooked on its first round out so they told me to keep it and see if there was any edible portions of it while they cook me another one. Phenomenal customer service.
I was delighted when my daughter received her kids mill on an old school cafeteria lunch tray. Everything they are steam fresh, even the bread apparently it’s made right there from scratch in house.
This is the kind of place that sets the ice cold mason jar of water on the table and has outstanding customer service. The prices were upper mid range and I’m sure would be too high for many members taste but I found them to be acceptable for the quality and overall experience.
I’m not really a drinker, I personally think it’s completely overrated, but for the rest of the world who likes to drink this is probably a pretty cool spot for you. They probably had 150 different types of selections or more.
Overall I would absolutely have to recommend this place to anyone considering making the drive to try it out. Really delicious...
