Twin Span Brewing is a favorite place of mine in the newish area around TBK Bank Sports Complex. I'd been a few times with work friends for different end of the week functions, but needed to return tonight to get a solid dinner. You know, a good burger and fries or something similar?
The interior of Twin Span is clean and sharp. As you walk through the entrance, the bar is prominently there off on the right, at a sort of oblong, not uniform angle. The floors are a simple concrete slab with little else upon them. The ceiling is mostly uncovered, exposing HVAC ductwork, supports, and conduit, but there are spaces with a wooden drop ceiling around the space. The lighting is what really makes the space unique - all throughout the dining room, there are spherical light fixtures dropped from the ceiling that give the space a bright but not harsh lighting. All of this about the interior styling I describe to ultimately say - I like it, it works.
For food on this particular visit, I opted for the traditional burger, to which I added pickles, onions, ketchup, pepperjack cheese, and bacon. I received this and my accompanying side of fries within 15 minutes of ordering and promptly devoured the entire thing. The burger was juicy, the fries were well seasoned, and the burger bun had some structural integrity and taste to it. All in all, a pleasant dining experience.
What really made this experience great was the company, however. I'd decided to come to Twin Span to just grab a meal at the bar, ponder some reddit on my phone, and then go home for the night. Instead of this, I randomly happened upon a group of co-workers and some of their family, who eagerly invited me over to commiserate with them. It was a truly pleasant surprise - one that made the evening great. This has little to do with Twin Span, but it was still a nice thing that happened this evening.
The only thing that soured me a little on this visit was the lack of gin from which to order a gin and tonic, my drink of choice. This sourness was removed by the presence of beers, of which I had two. Not my first preference, but I get that Twin Span's thing is having a bunch of beers. Though, if you have all the other liquors, why can't you guys also have gin? Think about that Twin Span - that would make me happier.
Regardless of the lack of one particular hard liquor, I'm coming back for more food in the future. The dining space is unique, the staff were really nice, and I enjoyed my food....
Read moreI took my wife and kids to Twin Span Brewing before heading over to the TBK to go bowling. Upon arriving on a cold Sunday around lunchtime, it was apparent that they were pretty busy due to baseball games going on and parents looking to find a place to stay warm and grab some food. We needed a table for four and the hostess thought she would be able to seat us immediately, which was a surprise. It turned out that the Chef needed that table to pair with another one to seat 10 people. He immediately apologized and promised he would get us taken care quickly. No big deal for my wife or myself, but it turned out he was worried about our kids. Within about 10 mins, he had a big booth ready for us, apologized again, and wanted to let us know our kids meals were on the house.
Upon being seated, the service was incredibly prompt and ready for us. We ordered wings, some tacos, a wrap, and couple of kids meals. The wings came out fast and were fantastic. My wife said her wrap was one of the best she had ever had (she gets them everywhere), and my tacos were definitely on point. The kids meal portions were huge and easily could have fed my kids twice. Overall, the food was amazing and I'm definitely going to try something new next time.
Before we left the Chef came back over to our table and reminded us the kids meals were on him and thanked us for the patience and the business. The reason I'm writing this review is because NONE of this extra service was needed, but the Chef did it anyway. The food could have been average, and I still would come back again, just because of the outstanding customer service my family received.
If you're coming in from out of town to go the TBK and need a place to grab some food or a cold beer, I would suggest you start your search at Twin Span Brewing. In a time where it's seems like most of the restaurant industry is failing and can't find employees, this one is a true...
Read moreAustin was a fantastic bartender and made myself and my friend feel right at home in our first visit here. His knowledge of beer was appreciated and he was just generally fast and friendly. I truly could go on about him but you get the idea: A++ service at the bar!
I love that they offer 4 oz. pours of beers. More places need to do this. I tried 6 different beers this way. And the majority of them were DELICIOUS. I'll be back to try more beers as the seasons change. Some of the best brewing happening in the Quad Cities is right here at Twin Span.
The food was ok. My friend got the Tuesday special, barbacoa tacos with chips and queso. He said it was fine but nothing exciting. I got the pretzel which the menu said was served with a beer cheese and boetjes mustard. The pretzel while large, was just a tad "over done" - you could tell it had been fried in the fryer just a bit longer than normal. All of the salt that should have been on the pretzel didn't stick and was instead on the plate. The "beer cheese" was pretty sad- it was was barely warm coming out and within 5 minutes in front of me, you couldn't even manage to get the pretzel to scoop through it, it had solidified. There also was a smaller container of a different cheese that wasn't the queso served with the chips or the beer cheese. It tasted bacon-y and had a bit of kick. It was delicious and appreciated... but it wasn't listed on the menu for the pretzel so, no clue what it was. Food took a bit longer than I thought it should - it wasn't busy, and when walking to the restroom I could see that they were well staffed in the kitchen. Def will come back and try the food again on another night - we all have our off days.
One picky complaint- the lighting is too bright. Turn those puppies down at night to create some mood and good vibes! I felt like I was drinking a beer in a Big Box store.
I'll be...
