Above Grnd Coffee was such a lovely upstairs cafe nook. When I turned off the staircase, I was immediately captivated by the art wall on the far side. Each piece was created by local artists and really set a tone and pace for the place I was in. I was ordering coffees for the group and taking them to go. I wasn't sure how to articulate what I wanted, however the brother that served me was kind. He made sure that I got everything I needed, being patient with my order. While I waited on my order I took the time to relax, leaning over the banister that overlooked the floor below. The coffee preparation was not rushed. No, care was put into each part of the process and I assure you that I could taste the difference! It was moving day and I didn't have time to require a do-over and I didn't want to go about muttering about the burnt espresso or anything, clearly, I had other things to focus on. But no need to worry or stress because my beverage was delightful, I even had the opportunity to choose which cream I preferred. Above all, I would certainly return to Above Grnd Coffee and share the experience with...
Read moreThe drinks are delicious! I enjoy the atmosphere. I think it's a great 3rd space. Both times I've been, I was standing at the counter for quite a while before anyone showed up to take my order. There were no employees to be seen. I also don't appreciate the way they deal with sizes & prices. The menu shows one singular price with no indication of what size it's for, so when you order & they ask what size, you have to ask what ounces the sizes are and how much they cost, which really seems to annoy them. Today, my two large drinks were $7.27 each. One was iced, one hot. Both were in 16oz cups, but the iced was only 10oz without ice & the hot was 12oz of liquid, 3oz foam, 1oz empty. I wouldn't normally nit pick in this way, but the hot drink was light as a feather. When I got home (3 blocks away), much of the foam had dissipated and the cup had a good 2 inches of empty space, and the person I got it for thought I'd been drinking it. I'm sure rent is very expensive for them, so I understand higher prices, but just be clear about them from the jump. I won't be back, personally. $7.27 for 10oz of dirty chai is...
Read moreThis is a very nice and special place. It's one of the very few late-night coffee shops, which is greatly appreciated. The crowd is young—mostly college-aged—but I'm in my mid-30s and have always felt safe and welcome here, regardless of my age, even if I stand out a little bit. The drinks are absolutely incredible. While drinking, they feel made with true love and passion, yet they do finish your orders super fast, so there's no long wait here. The environment is super clean and beautiful, with plants and local art. There's plently of places to sit and do your work, even reading/studying here is highly recommended as the tables and seating is spread out enough where you will not feel overly crowded or overwhelmed. Honestly, this is by far one of my favorite coffee shops in Portland. It's absolutely worth a visit. Everyone is...
