I called ahead to check wait times and when I said it was just me they said they could seat one person right away. I got there and it was very busy as usual. There is a sign that says kindly wait to be seated. This is the second time I have stood by the door and absolutely no one acknowledges me not even a greeting for an uncomfortable amount of time, even walking past me to go in and out multiple times. I eventually got someone’s attention and asked if they were still seating. I was instructed to put my name on the list and help myself to coffee. I unfortunately did not have time to wait and I was getting cut in line for coffee which is not the staff’s fault but just seems like an odd system for SUCH a busy place. I understand there may have been a chance I would have a wait a little even after calling, but I had no reliable way to know how long I would be waiting and frankly it just hurt my feelings to be ignored. I’m sure staff is surely doing their best while working such busy shifts but this did make me sad enough to...

Updated 2024 Excellence in breakfast. I come down to J&M probably once a month and their quality is always consistent. I would highly recommend the biscuits and gravy. Biscuits are fresh tasting and buttery, gravy is rich with huge chunks of sausage. The homestyle potatoes that come with your plate are always crispy and we'll seasonsed. Our waitress is so personable and prompt with our food we're in, out, and satisfied before we know it. I realize that I'm gushing slightly, but it's well deserved in this case. This is a solid choice for coffee and breakfast.

Update: After four years of continued success ordering here at J&M I’m still in love with their scrambles. Every time I order it it’s new and uniquely delicious. I can’t speak highly enough about the quality of the food and the staff. This is everything you want in a local cafe. If you haven’t already eaten here, you’re not going to be...

Awesome little diner in the east Portland/Buckman area been around for years, although seems to have changed hands but you'd never really know it. Small place and is popular, so there can be a wait at peak times on weekend. Food is consistently good, service has always been friendly and coffee is top shelf! Note: coffee and water is self serve from the bar, so don't sit around thinking someone is gonna bring it; pick your mug from the "mug post" and pour up endless refills. Mgmt. prefers payment with cash to keep costs down, but they now will accept credit cards if that's what ya got. On pleasant days they will open the large windows of this old warehouse type building, making it nice and breezy. Parking can be tough sometimes as it's just a block off Grand Ave. Love this place, I...

Quaint little place / cafe. I got takeout so maybe not able to give a proper review. Coffee selection is minimal, just standard espresso drinks and only vanilla syrup. Not a major issue just FYI. Breakfast & lunch menus have good options. I had the breakfast burrito which was quite large and comes with roasted potatoes. It was good and enough for 2ppl almost. I also got an eggs on English muffin. This was really greasy and turned me off a bit. It comes with 2 thick cut bacon slices, 2 eggs over easy, cheese and on and English muffin. They put some oil on top of the eggs which I think makes it greasy. The bacon to me was a bit fatty but ok. Overall, ok place but I would try somewhere else next time or eat there not takeaway. Super friendly staff and cool / comfortable inside atmosphere!

Summary: if you'd like to experience the most tasteless potatoes on the planet you've come to the right place! Probably ok if you just want coffee and a bright place to sit. Came here with three friends for brunch. Pros: bright, open space. Quircky mugs. Service was friendly. Cons: food sucked. We had four different items, french toast and three types of scrambles, one vegan, one special of the day, and one with mustard greens. Parts of the food were ok; passable. But nothing was delicious. The most memorable part was the completely tasteless potatoes. They had no seasoning and didn't even taste like potato. It's hard to fully describe their utter lack of flavor. Anyway, I would consider coming back for a cup of coffee but don't come for the food.
