Mount Desert Island Ice Cream has five shops that are mostly located in Portland but they also have a location in the District of Columbia and one location in Japan! We tried the ice cream at this location for the first time and it was so tasty! They pride themselves on making small batch, high quality ice cream with a high ratio of butterfat and low air whipped inside. You can tell that they care about their ice cream just by eating it. The flavors were all delicious, the atmosphere is small and simple. They don't list all of their flavors on their wall so if you really want to see what they have you're just going to have to go inside and check it out. The line gets long here quickly so the sooner you get here, the better. Service is counter service and was friendly and quick. If you're looking for some tasty and unique flavors in Portland, Maine, check this place out! My wife and I got the ice cream flight which consisted of your choice of 4 different flavors. They give big scoops for each flavor and the flight is only $9 so make sure you have someone to help share, or not! The flavors we got were, Metz Sugar Pill, Blueberry Sour Cream Crumble, Lemon Poppy Jam and Butterbeer. The Metz Sugar Pill was an "elevated" s'mores. It's a marshmallow ice cream base with bits of graham cracker and hot fudge ripple. The Blueberry Sour Cream Crumble was a blueberry and sour cream ice cream base with different sized bites of sugary crust inside. The Lemon Poppy Jam is a lemon and poppyseed ice cream base with raspberry jam ripple. And lastly the Butterbeer. It was hard to tell what was in this but we assumed it was a root beer and butterscotch ice cream. Of the four flavors that we had, I really liked the Blueberry Sour Cream Crumble the most. The flavor was rich with blueberries and a hint of sour cream and the crumble inside was soft and complemented the ice cream perfectly. Tasted like I was eating blueberry pie with ice cream. The Lemon Poppy Jam was also delicious and fresh tasting. The jam was plentiful and also complemented the ice cream well. The Metz Sugar Pill was a good take on s'mores and the ice cream tasted like it had some malt taste to it alongside the marshmallow flavor and I liked it a lot but I with there was a bit more graham cracker bits inside. Lastly, the Butterbeer was... Different. It mostly just tastes like root beer ice cream which wasn't bad but wasn't the Butterbeer I expected. I went to universal studios and tried Butterbeer from the Harry Potter themed part of the park and it tasted more like butterscotch. So if you're like me and expect that flavor, this ice cream is not that haha still good though and tasted like an ice cream float. This place has a while bunch of different flavors that I wanted to try but got full after sharing the sampler with my wife. Check out my pictures to see all the ice creams that they have as of posting this. Food - 5 ⭐ Atmosphere - 4.5 ⭐ Service - 5 ⭐ Overall - 5 ⭐ Follow me for more reviews across America 😎🍔🍕🍨🍦🦖🔧

AMAZING 😍 i usually dont like sorbets, but the blueberry basil sorbet was out of this world and still very thick and creamy for a sorbet. "The Dude" is like a White Russian in ice cream and it was also delicious. their flavor list was unique and creative, if you're lookin for a scoop that goes above and beyond the classics, this is the spot furthermore their service during covid-19 restrictions was effective and efficient. other ice creams places in the area only had call ahead ordering but Mt.Desert Island had all of their eye-catching flavors listed right in the window with someone ready to serve you in the doorway.

Omg! I love the flavors here! My single (actually two scoops) was so good, I came back for round 2 for a repeat the next day. I got Lamington (coconut base, etc) and Salted Caramel. I wish I could have it shipped! I checked this location out while visiting Portland from the DC area and was bummed I hadn't heard of one in the DC area....until I searched on IG/Google and discovered there's a DC location too! Will definitely visit that location (DC) too even though they may not have all the same flavors as this Portland location. I'll definitely come back whenever I'm in Portland too.

Great Place!

I have gone to this establishment twice and one experience was absolutely amazing. I love all the unique flavors and the staff was amazing. Even though it was a very busy day, we felt welcomed and taken care of. . The second time was not so great. Hence the 4 out of 5 stars. The staff member on duty, was clearly not having it. We had a larger order for 5, that 2 of us were getting. The first 2 requests were of a single scoop of the same flavor. The attendant gave us the wrong flavor. And then when we said heyy we didn't want the orange, it was the raspberry. He aggressively tossed the scoops back into the orange bin and grabbed the actual flavor and smacked the cups on the counter. My sister and I were just kind of shocked and quietly waited until he got the other one and continued with our order. The rest went smoothly ... until we got into the car. He had scooped one of the other flavors wrong and gave a different family member basil instead of sweet cream. 🤦‍♀️ At that point they just suffered and ate the Basil... I really like this place and will continue to support it. I don't know if that guy was just having a bad day or what. I just did not think the attitude was warranted. We were extremely patient with the guy. And I feel bad that the customers behind us had walked out when they saw his...

5 star ice cream but 1 star service. Was charged $6.96 for a small cup of ice cream. Very awkward experience on Sunday night. Was not greeted upon entering. The two employees did not make any eye contact with me the entire time. I asked for vanilla(the sign said vanilla) but he said they didn’t have it. Then asked a question about what a different flavor was but the employee mumbled quietly and he was not understandable. I got it anyway. He put the cup on the counter and stared at me so I handed him my card. He didn’t say how much it was but asked very clearly if I wanted to add a tip? I said no because his service was extremely strange. I was not offered a receipt. He left my card on the counter and walked away. My expectations were high based on the reviews but I won’t be returning as it was just too awkward of...
