As a family that has a celiac member, we have been going here for years. The food has been good, the place is spotless clean, and the service spotty. But the service last 4 times over the past few months has been awful. While I don't like using such a strong word it is valid and true.
1st instance - We order breakfast, coffee, and an assortment of items to take home. It was semi busy with about 2-3 people in line and about 1/3 of the tables occupied. Our breakfast, which consisted of items that had to be made, came out way before our coffee. When we asked about our coffee, you guessed it, they forgot. Then when made you would think they would bring it to the table? Nope, just yelled out our name.
2nd instance - We order a quick bite for breakfast to share and some items to take home. While eating the breakfast my daughter checks the box of items for home. Yep, missing 2 items that we paid for. Had to go to the counter and get the items added. When we got home, there was actually a 3rd item that was missed and was not there.
3rd instance - This was last week. We ordered a bunch of items to go. We mention to the person behind the counter about the missing item issues. He just literally looked at us with a blank stare. No I am sorry. Just a stare. We ordered 3 scones, 2 cupcakes, and some pecan rolls. He places the 2 pecan rolls in the box, then places 1 scone. Then starts to grab the cupcakes. My wife asks "did you get all the scones?" He looks in the box and grabs one more scone. My wife then asks "there are 3 right?" He has to grab another. Wow!
4th instance - We order just an Arnold Palmer and leave. This tastes weird. Go back in and were told they are out of black tea so they made it with Hibiscus tea. WTH? Yes, they gave a refund but honestly who does this?
We joke now that the people behind the counter are so high (not on life) that you have to literally watch everything they do because focusing on something as simple as reading a receipt and putting 3 scones in a box is too mentally challenging. : )
Hopefully the service will improve because it's becoming not worth it. Along with the screen to tip 20, 25, and 30% for standup service? If I have to order at a counter and pick up my items, that is not service. I won't be tipping until after I know I at least received the...
Read moreWe spent the day in Portland and I was looking for someplace that offered a gluten-free selection so I could hopefully have a safe lunch. I was excited to find someplace that was all gluten-free, so we walked the several blocks over and gave it a try. The atmosphere inside is cute, it looks like a tea shop/bakery.
We decided to order a bit for lunch first and then try some of their sweets on the way out. I had the mac n cheese, and I thought the noodles were a bit too overcooked for me, but overall the flavor was pretty good. My husband had the chili and cornbread and he was surprised how filling it was for vegan chili, he says he would order it again in a heartbeat and the cornbread was really moist.
After we finished lunch we ordered a piece of Coconut Dulce de Leche cake and then we took a Salted Caramel Cookie Bar to go. Both of the desserts we tried were SO sweet, to the point that it was cloying. I couldn't take more than a few bites of the cake. The texture was great, but the sweetness felt like it was trying to offset some of the flavor that sometimes comes along with choosing all vegan ingredients. I have had great gluten-free deserts, and I totally understand the desire to have less processed or vegan versions of things, but in this case the combination just wasn't great for me. It wasn't bad though, and I think a lot of other people might have more success here than I did. I might give it another chance in the future and I would still recommend giving it a try...
Read moreI hate writing a bad review, but sometimes an experience is so bad that I feel compelled to. My wife and I stopped in here yesterday to get a sweet snack. We didn't know it's a vegan and gluten free bakery, as we saw nothing anywhere in or outside the shop to indicate that. We decided to share a piece of the Mexican chocolate cake in the display case, and my wife got a cold brew coffee. The coffee was good. The cake was okay. The flavors were fine, but the icing was gritty and overly sweet. That's not why I'm leaving two stars though. The reason for the two stars is that a few bites into the cake I found a short (maybe 1/4 inch long) fiber that may or may not have been a hair of some sort. I pointed it out to my wife and we figured that stuff happens and decided to eat a bit more of the cake... until I found another hair. The second hair was most definitely hair. I couldn't tell if it was an eyelash, or an arm hair, or what kind of hair. At that point we were most definitely done eating the cake, which was just okay at best before we knew it had hair. If you're someone that suffers from celiac and don't mind some hair in your food then I guess that maybe you'd find some enjoyment in the baked goods. Vegans however might want to stay away, as hair is definitely not vegan. I did point out the hairs to the person that seemed in charge and she offered us something else from the case, but no refund. We had eaten less than 1/4...
