I came to The Frying Dutchman during the lunch rush and couldn’t decide between the salt & pepper calamari and the mapo poutine. Honestly though, the entire menu looked so creative and mouthwatering that it took me several minutes to narrow down what I wanted. Fresh Maine potatoes? Housemade sauces to go with everything like classic Dutch and Thai red curry mayos? Korean ramen cheese dogs? Sign me up. I was so indecisive that I ended up getting both dishes, and boy let me tell ya…
The salt & pepper calamari was lightly battered and seasoned to perfection. It was a ball of amazing flavor in every bite. It didn’t have that super chewy texture you’d find at most restaurants; instead it had a subtle chew but was ultimately smooth and tender, with a mild crispy touch to boot. I didn’t think calamari could be served that way, but there I was, and I couldn’t stop eating. I’m glad I took some photos before I tried it, because I’m not sure if there would be anything left by the time I’d have remembered to do so. It was absolutely scrumptious!
Now for the mapo poutine…it was wonderfully delicious! Who knew a Sichuan mince beef gravy went so well with fries? The fresh local cheese curds and hot chili oil complimented the whole thing to make it one of the best poutines I’ve ever had. It was a bomb of savory flavor with just the right amount of spices. It was quite addicting, and yet it didn’t feel too heavy - I’m thinking the fresh ingredients had something to do with that. It just tasted so, so good!
I’m seriously considering visiting Portland again just to try the rest of the unique menu at this place. It was THAT good - I couldn’t...
Read moreI absolutely love fries and The Frying Dutchman has the best fries in Portland! The sauces complement the fries so well, but the fries are so good that they also taste perfect without sauces. The adults and the kids in our party loved all the food. Everything we tried was so satisfying and tasted so fresh. Also very reasonably priced and affordable, even the seafood. The batter on the calamari and Korean cheese dog is light and crispy. The Mapo poutine is so flavorful and so well balanced. The strawberry choco flan is a must try dessert. It tastes as good as it sounds. They are located on the 2nd floor of the Portland Public Market House. There are dining tables and chairs which is convenient to accommodate our party with kids. Highly recommend this place. The owners are very kind and...
Read moreMy wife and I had the BEST brunch at The Frying Dutchman in Monument Squares Public Market House last Sunday…. First off the creativity and execution is incredible. We got the Florentine eggs Benny fries and the Lavender Rose Dalgona Coffee ( which was unlike anything I’ve ever had before, and I’ve had lots of different types of coffee! ). Dining here was such a unique experience to taste this type of twist on eggs Benedict and a morning coffee. The flavors were OUT of this world!!! You NEED to try this restaurant. You can taste the passion in the food, the service is outstanding, and you get the best view of monument square from above. Highly recommend ! No where in Portland is offering this type of dining. What the heck are you waiting for ?! We will for sure be...
