In-N-Out is one of those places you hear about on the east coast that is practically treated as "the stuff of legends". On my journey to the west, I finally got the opportunity to test the mettle of all that I've ever heard -- and frankly, I was let down. The place itself is modern, clean, looks good. Walking in, I was pleasantly surprised at the extremely short menu "ordering is as easy as 1-2-3!", the numbers literally just being the only menu items. But as soon as I heard the person in front of me speak their order, I was left confused. What the heck are "fries animal style?" That was not on the menu. And instantly I felt like I wasn't part of the "club", which is alienating. The front desk person explained to me what it was, and I went for it. The wait for the food was considerable. The food itself was disappointing - the burger was so thin that I was mostly just eating bread and condiments. The fries "animal style" seemed underdone with underwhelming texture, but did remind me of poutine.
So to tell the truth, I don't really get it. The historic pictures on the wall as well as the name of the place imply a fast in and out experience, without frills. I looked up what the deal was with not having stuff be on the menu, and it turns out there's a whole company-backed "secret menu", which really just puzzles me. It seemed like the ethos of the place was supposed to be simplicity. Instead, they loaded themselves up on so many "secret items" that they now suddenly have to cater to, at the cost of being able to serve it up in a timely manner, while also running the risk of the public running wild with "urban legend" menu items, which they now also either have to cater to, or constantly deny. It makes a permutative mess out of what should've been a beautiful and simple idea. It's pretentious in the same way that someone would tell you "you just gotta be in the know" if you didn't have a good experience, and that honestly feels dishonest on their part, because it goes from "ordering is as easy as 1-2-3" to "ordering is actually a series of secret hand shakes". Not worth it. Maybe it should be called...
Read moreIn-N-Out is hands down one of the best fast food spots, especially if you're craving something fresh, simple, and satisfying. Their burgers are legendary—always made to order with high-quality ingredients, never frozen. The soft yet slightly toasted buns, juicy patties, crisp lettuce, and signature sauce all come together perfectly. And let’s not forget about their hand-cut fries—though they can be a little hit or miss, they’re way better when ordered "well done" or "Animal Style."
One of the best things about In-N-Out is that it’s open late. If you’re out in the middle of the night, whether after a long drive, a party, or just because you’re hungry, it’s the perfect spot to hit. The late-night vibe is always chill, and the service is consistently friendly. Plus, compared to other fast food joints, it feels way cleaner and more put together.
The menu is simple, but that’s what makes it great. If you know about the secret menu, you can really step up your order. A Double-Double Animal Style is always a win, and if you’re extra hungry, a 3x3 or 4x4 is the way to go. The shakes are also a solid choice—classic, creamy, and just the right amount of sweetness.
Overall, In-N-Out is one of the best fast food experiences you can get. It’s affordable, consistent, and perfect for those late-night cravings. If you haven’t tried it yet, you’re...
Read moreRating so low because of cross contamination risk. If you don't have any food allergies or sensitivity you should be fine.
I have a serve allergy to gluten, and don't eat out often because it's just safer that way. When I do eat out I usually call ahead to see if my allergy can be accommodated. Which is what I did when I went to In N Out. It was suggested that I could order almost anything without the Bun (protein style). I double checked that info on Google and it seemed safe enough.
Went to In N Out today. Ordered inside since I didn't want to be to difficult in the drive through. I ordered a hamburger protein style no spread and told the cashier that I had a severe gluten allergy so she could let the people preparing the food know. Everything seemed to go super well. I was very impressed.
I sat down and had full view of the kitchen from my seat. After watching them prepare the food I realized that my food would not be safe to eat and gave it to my husband. Nearly every employee was wearing gloves, but every one of the gloves touched bread (gluten) then touched my food with the same gloves. Maybe 3-4 different people. My food was then placed on a counter top that other food with the Buns sat on before it. At no point in time were gloves changed or counters wiped. That type of cross contamination could make...
