Hear ye, hear ye! If you think you know of a Taco Place better than this, then you are mistaken.
Have you been to Tacolicious? I hope not, because that place is not as delicious as this place. Have you been to "Tacos in Paradise?" ... well yes you have, Taco Paradise is more correctly called Quiero Mas, for this place IS Paradise! (FYI: those taco places are made up... sorry. haha! It was my attempt at a joke) First off, before I talk about anything more, I want you to know how remarkable the Horchata is! (I got it without ice)
Now, to get back on topic... I'm a little loopy because of how remarkable this place was. haha! I noticed them from across the street, as I was walking out of my barber... and I had never seen/heard of it before. (apparently it has been here about 8 months.) So, as soon as I saw it, I knew I needed to visit. (Ignore the fact that I already have dinner plans in 2 hours.)
Upon walking in, I LOVE how spacious it is, and how great the coloring/design is. A HUGE bonus point, is how Nacho Libre was playing on the TV.... I had never thought of that before, Nacho Libre being played in a Taco Shop, but after seeing this I knew it was the best idea around.
I was quickly greeted and asked if i needed any help, I kindly told the employee that this was my first time here and needed a few minutes to process things. ... after I few moments I said I wanted 3 tacos... He then suggested that I upgrade the tacos to Gringas --with cheese-- for a little more and I took the offer on one of them. (My big regret is that i didn't do this for all three.)
After I made the order, I was kindly asked if I would like any water made for me. --FIrst off, the fact that I was asked this is remarkable! A+++ for customer service. I responded that I wouldn't want water, that I meant to order Horchata; I was then asked if I wanted with/without ice and I chose without.
Let me tell you, as I've mentioned before, the Horchata is AMAZING! It was halfway finished before I even had my tacos ---which were brought to me really fast. (Jimmy Johns should study how fast these guys are, because they're freaking fast. PS: for those that don't catch the joke ..."Freaky Fast" is the current Jimmy Johns advertisement... but that's beside the point. haha!)
Now, after I tried my tacos, I lost my breath... well, first off my mouth was full but secondly because of how AMAZING they were! My only mistake, is that i didn't fully cheese all 3 of them.
Trust me, this is the best taco place in town, as well as the best horchata I've had in town. Check this place out, but you'll acknowledge that you're in...
Read moreAs noon broke, we drove up University Ave from the south to reach Queiro Mas. But fate was against us that day! For alas, a 5k race was finishing up, and we had to wait for all the plus-size contestants and families with children not in a stroller. But no matter - our resolve was tested but as I was beginning to bend, I realized, "We can simply bend our route and come in from the west!" And so, we turn left on Center Street and went over to Freedom Blvd. And as I turned to avoid the road closure, I found myself stuck behind a line of cars that would make a Manhattanite say, "Eh that's nothin'!" But for us, for me, it was somethin'. And yet, my resolve had never been stronger! So anyway, we eventually parked around the corner and walked over to Queiro Mas and went in. It was pretty cool inside. To say that I was impressed would be fairly accurate. I also have to say that, given the central-downtown location of Quiero Mas, I expected the prices to be bigger too. They were still more expensive than I'd want to pay for tacos, but not as bad as I thought. I just wanted to point that out. And so, we had a pretty nice time inside. My critiques are that our food came out at drastically odd intervals, especially given that there was only 1 other person in the restaurant for almost the entirety of our visit. We ordered several tacos and an esquite, and the esquite came out about 7 minutes after the tacos, so it was an odd wait. But the food was very good! It wasn't the most wonderful meal I've ever had, but it was definitely good and I'd have no objections eating it again. Perhaps someday if my salary can get the best of inflation, I will take the family here again. Until then I encourage all people everywhere to want more from their Mexican food, and then translate that sentiment into Spanish and hopefully that will bring you to Quiero Mas, where you too can write your very own Google review about...
Read moreI served my mission back in ‘52 in Mexico City, Mexico. Ole’ Cortines had just won in a landslide and Distrito Federal was bustling with new energy. It was an unusually hot day for December and I sat down under the shade of a tall tree in Chapultepec to wipe the sweat from my brow. As I prayerfully nodded off in the heat, I had a dream.
In the dream, I found myself clothed in a long robe made of the finest linen. A man came to up to me, called himself El Sargento. He placed a small object wrapped in a page of La Prensa in my hands.
It was a Carne Asada Fries burrito. Delicately grilled to a golden brown on both sides. The man produced a cuchillo and sliced it diagonally, cutting it with an expert hand.
The aroma that assailed my nostrils was intoxicating. Spiced asada. Tender, yet firm. Fresh beans, and rice. Simple, and perfectly salted. Diced tomatoes, matured enough to be soft and juicy, never knowing the kiss of death from a freezer. Crisp lettuce. The cheese, guacamole, and crema, all expertly proportioned across all areas of the burrito to allow for every bite to be perfectly laden with the appropriate flavors. And the fries. My Gosh, the fries. McDonald’s long ago used to fry their fries in beef-fat oil. You youngsters will never know that ecstasy.
The burrito was gone before even I knew what happened. My eyes started to well with tears at the gratitude I had for El Sargento and the burrito. I quickly dabbed my eyes, but as I did, the man disappeared from before me.
I was awoken by my missionary companion, the taste of onion from the guacamole still on my tongue.
It’s been over 70 years. I have traveled the world. I have been married twice. I have spread my progeny. I have dined with kings and queens and dictators. But I have never forgotten that burrito. Until today, when I ate Quiero Mas’s Carne Asada Burrito.
I am writing this through bleary eyes....
