Authentic North Indian Dining experience at Tandoor Indian Grill
If you're looking for genuine North Indian Punjabi food in Salt Lake City or Utah, Tandoor Indian Grill is the real deal. This restaurant delivers an authentic dining experience without the frills – just fantastic food, reasonable prices, and excellent service.
What I Loved:
Taste The food was absolutely delicious! It's rare to find Indian restaurants outside of India that maintain the authentic flavors, and Tandoor Indian Grill does it right. I was particularly impressed that they avoided unnecessary ingredients like curry leaves in dishes that don't need them. For example, the Gobhi Manchurian was perfectly flavored, and the Dal Makhani was rich and creamy – just like you'd expect from a traditional Indian kitchen. The Kadhai Paneer was another highlight, with its perfect blend of spices. The Garlic Naan had real garlic and was crispy, adding that extra touch of authenticity.
Reasonable Pricing Tandoor Indian Grill offers excellent value for the quality of food they provide. You don’t feel like you’re overpaying, which is often the case with Indian restaurants in the area.
Portion Size The portion sizes were generous, something that many so-called "Indian" restaurants in the U.S. tend to skimp on. Unlike places that serve tiny portions in small bowls, Tandoor’s servings are large and satisfying. I had enough curry to easily enjoy it with the complimentary rice and two garlic Naans. Most places give you so little curry that you’re left with a heap of rice and nothing to pair it with – not the case here!
Service The service was quick and efficient. The staff were well-trained and made sure everything was prompt and smooth, from ordering to food delivery.
Ambiance The restaurant offers a spacious dining area with a lovely option for outdoor seating. It’s a welcoming environment that adds to the overall experience.
Modern Billing Experience Tandoor Indian Grill makes payment hassle-free with QR code scanning, eliminating the wait time for someone to process your payment. It’s a small detail, but it makes the experience more convenient.
Hospitality The hospitality here was fantastic. They welcomed us with complimentary mint and sweet chutneys and ended our meal with a complimentary portion of mango ice cream for everyone at the table. These little touches make all the difference.
Flexible Hours Unlike most Indian restaurants that close between 3 and 6 PM, Tandoor Indian Grill was open when we arrived around 3:30 PM. We had been out at Sundance enjoying the fall colors (despite the unusually hot day and long wait times for the lift) and were thrilled to find the restaurant open and ready to serve us. This flexibility was a big plus.
Suggestions:
The only thing I would suggest to elevate the experience even more is to include an onion salad with lime dressing and a chaat masala on the side. It’s a staple in many Indian dining experiences and would complement the already fantastic menu.
Tandoor Indian Grill is a must-visit if you're craving authentic Indian food in Utah. From the taste to the service, everything was spot on. The generous portion sizes, reasonable pricing, and thoughtful hospitality make this place stand out. They are also flexible with their hours, which is a huge bonus when you're out exploring and need a late lunch. Highly...
Read moreJust went here last night with my husband, and I thought I’d leave a critical review because this place has a lot of potential.
The service: The service was okay. Our main server was great, I didn’t get her name. We waited an appropriate amount of time for our food. I will say, enforcing a more professional dress code might make the place seem more fancy and professional. The boy who filled our water seemed like he didn’t want to be there, and he was wearing sweats which made my husband and I feel way overdressed. Other than that, service was good.
The food:
The food was great! We got the curry and it comes in large portions so you should plan to take home leftovers. The menu could do some revamping. We didn’t know which items may or may not have nuts in them, so if you’re allergic to nuts (like my husband) make sure you let your waiter know because when we asked about nuts in the food, the waitress seemed unsure. She did give us a complimentary dessert, that had nuts (she said there wasn’t) but I checked and there was. Not making a big deal with this one though, since it was complimentary and probably just what they had leftover. It was nice to get something for free.
The venue:
There’s plenty of space! It didn’t seem busy on a Saturday night which was surprising. We were seated at a booth, and all of the booths were completely covered in paper, even though they had linens underneath. I understand not wanting to clean up a potential mess, but the vibe would have been so much better if I didn’t feel like a child doing a painting craft. Not to mention, I couldn’t rest my arms on the table because I don’t like the feel of paper on my skin. Remove the paper, add some more decor, (maybe dim the lights more) and this place would feel very high-end.
I do recommend this place. My husband and I frequently go to Bombay house, and this place is practically the same, just cheaper and less of a cultural/professional vibe. Like I said, it has a lot...
Read moreAs far as a restaurant goes, Tandoor is an okay choice. Food isn't bad, service is okay. For the price it's worthwhile. However, there's two HUGE problems that left a bad taste in my mouth and will prevent me from ever coming back.
The first issue is the food itself. There is absolutely no way it's homemade. And in fact, it's not. One of the employees messed up by accident and let it slip that some of the food is store bought premade. If I go to a restaurant, I want a home cooked meal. If I want reheated food, I'd go to McDonald's. For the prices they charge I expect much more than a frozen dinner. If you've been a chef for any length of time - or just enjoy cooking - it's incredibly obvious which foods aren't actually made inhouse. It's not just buying premade pies to slice for dessert. I'm talking entire meals are store bought and frozen.
My second issue is what caused me to write this review. Towards the end of the meal it came to my attention that the wait staff doesn't keep the tips. That is absolutely NOT okay. I'm a lead server and nothing sets me off more than tip stealing. If a wait staff gets paid in tips alone, then it's the owners job to make sure business is high enough for them to earn at LEAST minimum wage per hour. If not, then the owner has to ensure they get paid state minimum anyway. If a server makes X amount per hour instead of tips, then you still can't keep the tips. Tips are for your SERVER. I'm tipping that specific person for their hard work. I'm not tipping the owner for being in business. Their earnings come from the price of food, not tips. An owner should NEVER touch the tips, ever. It's federal law.
If I hadn't heard about the tip theft, I might have overlooked the store bought food and gone back once in a while. But after what I've heard, seen, and tasted, I'll stick to making my own at home. At least then I know what kind of owner...
