We tried the River Wok on a Friday afternoon, being among the first folks to enter when they opened. We had made reservations on line for a later time. They were gracious in canceling that one and seating us. BTW: making reservations from their web site is easy and efficient. The venue is repurposed from a previous upscale restaurant. There were a lot of changes, making it still an attractive, classy room. The staff are very friendly and attentive. Prices were about half again higher than other Asian places in Pueblo. They offer most dishes as 'half' or 'family style'. We ordered two dishes 'family style' to be shared among 3 fairly big eaters. So, the food: We would call it competent, but unremarkable The menu is very limited: If I recall, 3 Korean offerings, 2 Chinese and two Japanese, as well as fried rice. We ordered Bulgogi and pork Katsu. They came on platters with big bowls of rice to share. The bulgogi didn't have a lot of flavor. The platter had some vegetables, but not much, although they were crispy stir-fried. Bulgogi should always have some heat, this didn't. There is a 'spicy' bulgogi on the menu, which presumably is, indeed, spicy but even the 'regular' should have had some heat. The katsu was well enough prepared and tasty. At other Japanese establishments in which we've dined, the katsu is cut up for taking with chop sticks. These were whole, more like German Schnitzels. So, final look: Honestly, the place is nice, the staff is great; but the food is no better than other Asian places in town and higher priced. The only thing I can think of that makr River Wok distinctive is that it's one of only two restaurants in Pueblo that serves any...
Read moreThe waiter seemed very concerned with making sure my friend was happy, and didn't seem concerned with my experience at all. They didn't have the ingredients to make her drink so they gave her a drink for free. She was inconvenienced, made sense. They brought me my drink and it tasted like floor cleaner. The waiter noticed I hadn't touched my drink and asked if everything was okay. I said I didn't really like the drink and he said he would make me another one. After contemplating, I didn't really want to chance not liking another drink (as they're $14 a piece), so I declined. I didn't touch the drink at all besides the one sip and he charged me for it anyway. Not a huge fan of the food, but I can see some liking it. The service is mostly what drove me away. He didn't ask me anything after I told him I didn't want a new drink, and exclusively spoke with only my friend despite me not touching my food or my drink...
Read moreGreat location, although it was a little hard to find. Friendly atmosphere, great service. We ordered edamame and shrimp tempura appetizers. Both were delicious! The tempura was perfectly cooked! Hubs had the General Choe's Chicken. Great flavor but quite spicy. I ordered the Chicken Teriyaki, which was just okay. I had upgraded to veggie fried rice, which was just okay, I should have saved the $3 upcharge. The teriyaki chicken was a little dry. I was expecting a thicker teriyaki style sauce. This is served with a lighter, slightly bland sauce. All of which was improved by dousing with a lot of soy sauce. There was also not much chicken. Portion needs to be bigger for the price. All in all, it was really good. Oh, I almost forgot. Our meals came with a side salad and miso soup both were delicious 😋 Not sure what kind of dressing on the salad, not the typical orange dressing, but whatever it was, it...
