UPDATE 2: This place struggles, but it's a good value and the staff try their best. 3 stars!
UPDATE: They've gotten better. Still not perfect, but better.
ORIGINAL REVIEW: Beware of shady pricing!
We tried to order Anthony's $25 "coal fired bundle" but kept getting an error on the website. The deal is for a large pizza with one topping, and when we tried to do half and half (one half with a meat, one half with a vegetable), it kept saying "pick a topping." So we called up. We had to wait a few minutes through the "did you know you can order online?" nonsense, and were then put on hold. When we finally got to a human being, they took the order and told us it would be $29+.
Um...ok? Before she hung up, I asked her to repeat the amount. Yep. $29-something. I pointed out that it's a $25 special bundle, and she tried to spin it as "oh, that's like taxes." Sorry, but no. Probably an honest mistake on her part (at least for a moment). She then corrected herself. "Oh, it's extra for the second topping." Um...we're not getting a second topping. "Yeah, it's like half a pizza with a second topping." We took a moment to make sure she understood that it was one topping on half the pizza, and a different topping on the other half. She got it, but kept trying to explain it's like getting an extra topping.
We then realized that's probably why the online system wouldn't take the order, and flashed back to an in-person experience where our bill was higher and the server caught it and fixed it. Turns out they really do want to charge you for a second topping for a half-and-half scenario.
That's just shady. And it's a shame, because we enjoyed the pizza the one time we went. But just out of principle, we're not going to pay extra for the same product. There's no added cost incurred here (same cost of ingredients, and maybe 5 extra seconds of labor?) and most places will gladly accomodate; who wouldn't want to please the entire family! That we were (perhaps accidentally) lied to about it took the cake.
We cancelled the order. Plenty of amazing pizza places in Wayne to choose from that won't pull those kinds of games. I'll gladly update this review and we'll give Anthony's another chance if they address the issue and explain the source...
Read moreYesterday, 7/14/2022, I placed a delivery order at 3:30 pm for a 6:20 pm delivery on ACFP's website. I received order confirmation and my card was charged. I had a board meeting at 6:30 pm with 12 attendees anticipating food. At 6:02 pm I received a call from DoorDash that my order was canceled saying the order was never received at Anthony's and I was to call the restaurant. At 6:13 pm I called and spoke with the manager Howard (Harold)??, and he was going to make it right, order the food again and have it delivered. At 7:01 I received a calls from the manager asking if the food was delivered, it was not. He said the driver was on their way, 5 minutes away. Driver and food never showed. I received a text saying the food was being delivered at 7:03 pm. Food never showed. I called back to the manager at 7:14 pm and told him the food never showed. He asked what did I want to do. He could prepare the food, again, but couldn't say when it would be delivered. Blamed it on DoorDash. I told him to cancel the order and refund my credit card. At 8:23 pm I received a text that my DoorDash driver was approaching with my food. This was 45 minutes after my board meeting ended and my board members did not get feed. At 8:47 pm food arrived. I told the driver the order was previously canceled at 7:14 pm and I didn't want or need the food. Not a good experience at all. If the manager was concerned about a customer, with a decent size order, and trying to make a bad situation better, he should have put the food in his car and deliver it himself vs. relying on a delivery service. I was 10 minutes away. BTW, my credit has yet to be posted to my credit card. Horrible...
Read moreWe're continuing our mission to find the best Margherita pizza in North Jersey. Recently, we tried Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza in Wayne, NJ. Normally, we stick with the independent pizza spots but the "coal fired" caught our attention. We were thinking... coal fired has to be good, right? We went with the Margherita pie and a Pepperoni pie. Up first, the Margherita. When you open the large box, we saw a very small square Margherita which is okay...this is about taste! The sauce is spread perfectly, the fresh mozzarella melted perfectly, and the touch of parmesan cheese in the sauce was a nice touch. The pie is very thin but crunchy. The basil was strange... it was used as a "garnish" where the stem and leaves were thrown onto the pie. Normally, the basil is spread but again, it was there... no big deal. The taste: just okay. Sauce is very good but the crust is what hurt this pizza. It was very bland; not very fresh. Crispy - yes. Because we've had better pies at independent locations and with the price of this pie, yes pretty expensive, you are better off trying our other reviewed locations. The Pepperoni. We wanted to see what a regular pie would taste like. Greasy. The Margherita pie was much better than this. The crust was crispy, the mozzarella was a little overcooked, the pepperoni was ... well, you're average pepperoni. And that's it... an average pie. Basically, this is a place you go to have a drink and a quick pie. It is a very nice establishment but I think we are going to stick with our independents from now on. Onto the...
