I was drawn to this bakery because of the honey almond cake, but I was told that that flavor selection was discontinued awhile ago. Super hard to pick from the plethora of choices - but I saw several reviews that raved about the double chocolate cake. And since I assumed that one would be a little heavy, I also chose the mixed berries to hopefully even out the chocolate taste.
So glad that I tried these selections! I have to say that the double chocolate cake is one of my favorites - decadent, delicious, and so rich. I'm a fan of chocolate cake, but not chocolate cream - and yet I couldn't stop eating it! For $5.25 a slice, the pricing isn't too bad. The cake was pretty moist and had a great amount of chew in each bite while the cream was light but still packed a punch in taste. Ended up ordering this again the next time I visited because we all enjoyed it so much.
The mixed berries was also really nice. I was hoping it would compare to Porto's, and I think it's pretty close except that the cream from Mr. Baker's is more light and airy while the cake still has that moistness and sponginess in each bite. Good amount of berries that added some tartness to the dessert, and I really appreciated that they packed a lot of cream so you get a good amount of both cake and cream in each bite.
And we had to try their tiramisu. I believe it's also $5.25 a slice - it's pretty tasty but you can really taste the sweetness and heaviness of the dessert. There's a ton of cocoa powder on top, and as you take bite after bite, you can't help but hate yourself for continuing to eat and yet not want to stop. I probably wouldn't order this again and go with something different the next time I visit, but if you're a fan of sweets and tiramisu, give this flavor a try!
They have rainbow cakes, even a build your own cake selection where you can mix and match 8 different slices for a cheaper price. They sell whole cakes for around $30 and up, but if you enjoy exploring various flavors and trying different desserts, that build your own cake option is super nice. The slices of cake all look so uniform inside of the plastic covering that I almost expected the cakes to taste stale and artificial, but I was surprised by the moistness and richness of the flavors that I tried.
There's coffee, cupcakes, macarons, pastries, etc. This place is definitely a hidden gem for bakeries in Rancho; they're located in the Ross and Old Navy plaza - right by the Farmer's Market that they have on the weekends. Parking lot is huge, so that's never a problem. Workers are pretty friendly but they always seem to want you to hurry and order so you can get in and out. No minimum on card.
tl;dr - A new favorite place for cakes! Highly recommend their double chocolate cake and the mixed berries cake. Will be back to try more items...
Read moreI’ve visited Mr. Baker in Rancho Cucamonga several times, genuinely hoping each visit would be better than the last. I really wanted to love this place because it has so much potential but unfortunately, it hasn’t lived up to expectations.
Atmosphere: The overall vibe of the café is actually very nice. The indoor seating is decent, while the outdoor area is a bit more spacious and comfortable (though you’re facing the street/plaza, so there’s no view). I’d give the overall seating a 7/10. It also seems like it would be a great study spot quiet, cozy, and inviting so I’d give the study vibe a 7/10 as well.
Staff: I’ve never had any issues with the staff. They’ve always been kind and welcoming, and I truly appreciate that. 10/10
The Bakery Items: This is where I’ve had the most consistent disappointment. The pastries and sweets often taste dry and seem like they’ve been sitting out for a while. It feels like freshness just isn’t guaranteed, which is unfortunate considering the pricing. Speaking of which — the items are on the pricier side, and it’s hard to justify the cost when the quality isn’t quite there. I think with some improvement in freshness and variety, this area could really shine. 0/10
Drinks: I’ve tried a few drinks now, hoping to find something I like, but unfortunately I haven’t enjoyed any of them. The flavors tend to be off, and I’d personally recommend focusing on perfecting a few staple drinks rather than offering a wide variety that doesn’t quite hit the mark.
Mr. Baker truly has the foundation for something great a beautiful space, kind staff, and a great concept. I’m sharing this feedback in hopes that it can help them improve, because I would love to see this place thrive. With some adjustments to the quality and freshness of the menu, I think it could easily become a...
Read moreSince I go to the Terra Vista Farmers Market, I've had my eye on Mr Baker since before they opened. Their grand opening was on August 11, 2016 and I attended with a fellow Yelper. We got to check out the bakery and had free samples.
Since that summer day in 2016, I've been back a few more times. I've purchased their cream-filled croissant with strawberries and green tea croissants. I've also tried their specialty coffee (latte etc.)When my sister had her baby, I bought a full box of a variety of their desserts (cakes, tarts, macarons etc.). I've also seen them at the RCHS event "A Taste of Rancho" in September 2016.
They were offering savory items (salad, pizza), but I don't think that was very successful. They offer sandwiches, but they are pre-made and refrigerated.
They do have an outdoor patio which is dog friendly and on some weekends, they were giving away free dog treats.
I've waited a while before finally writing this review, but with everything I've tried, I give them a solid 3 out of 5. It's just "OK". Some items are too sweet, some are unimpressive/forgettable and some I like. Just their their pastries, their customer service is also "hit or miss".
I didn't find myself coming back too often in 2017 and when I had to chose between local bakeries in Rancho Cucamonga in the same vicinity at least, I ended up at Cake Among Us (on Haven Ave in the same plaza as Anytime Fitness) ordering custom whole birthday cakes for my husband and sister-in-law's birthdays and opted for whole cakes/pastries for family get togethers from Paris Pastries (Haven & Foothill...
