Every December 23, we go out for Thai food to celebrate the life of a family member who passed away. It was her favorite type of cuisine. Since moving to Central Oregon, we hadn't been to any Thai restaurants. Thai O is a little gem tucked away in a shopping center near Fred Meyer.
Upon walking in, we were greeted by our waiter. He was the only wait staff that we saw in the half fully restaurant. Having been a server, I know how daunting it can be to manage many tables alone. There were only three of us, but he was managing a 7-top and some smaller groups. He was attentive and prompt throughout our time there. The rest of the patrons seemed to be having a great experience, as well.
We ordered pot stickers and egg rolls to start. They were fresh and hot. The dipping sauces were awesome. I kept one to put on my entrée. Both tangy and sweet, but not the same concoction.
For entrées we ordered Basil Stir Fry with pork, Pad Thai with beef, and Teriyaki Chicken.
The basil stir fry was on point. The green beans were perfectly al dente. All the vegetables were really, but fresh green beans can be tricky. The sauce was so good that I would have put it in a cup and drank it. The white rice was a good vessel to carry the sauce.
Although the other two dishes weren't mine, I was able to try them both. My 14 year old cleaned the plate of his teriyaki chicken. Including the fresh broccoli and the carrot garnish. My husband's beef pad Thai was tasty as well. Mine was the best, though. We left feeling food drunk and elated. That's what happens when you eat so much you're ready for a nap.
I highly recommend Thai O. They put a lot of care into the preparation of their food, and the recipes are enriched with Thai flavors. Our celebration of life was abundant in delight.
We will be returning and are stoked that we found this place that's just a few...
Read moreSad decline in service level and food... we have been coming to Thai O off and on since we moved to the area three years ago. The food was decent, if not spectacular. We tried for the last two weeks to place a to-go order. We tried calling on several occasions and no one picked up the phone. We assumed this just meant they were busy. Yesterday, we were in the area, so decided to go in to place the order and bring it home. I currently have a cast on my leg, so my mother went in to place the order. It took 45 minutes, because the kitchen kept forgetting items. Finally we head home. Only to find that two of the dishes included bell peppers, which we had asked for them to omit. I am allergic to them. My husband and mother both dislike them. We ALWAYS ask for them to be held out.
My mom was really sad as she had wanted to buy us a nice dinner. So I called the restaurant to let them know. It seems like the kitchen had been having issues overall, so I thought they would want to know. Not only did they not want to know, they lied and said my mother had not told them to hold the peppers. This is my mother and a true allergy. She does not forget. If anything, she would be prone to telling them repeatedly. The gentleman who answered the phone was rude, and blamed my mother.
As to the food (that I did get to try), it was ok. The soup (Thom Ka) had good flavor but contained nothing but onions and a few mushrooms. In short, food is ok. Service used to be ok but seems to have gone drastically downhill. Guess we will have to head in to Bend from now on if we are...
Read moreI ordered pork pad woon sen take out- I was told on the phone it would be about 15-20 minutes. I arrived to the restaurant about 45 minutes later. After being in the restaurant waiting at the cash register for about 10 minutes I was finally greeted by the employee. I informed him I was there to pick up an order and the name that would be on it. I waited an additional 30 or so minutes before he even went to check on the food, just standing around at the front. Finally, he grabbed a to go bag that had been sitting in the window since before I arrived and handed it to me and told me the total. I handed him cash and waited for another 10 or so minutes to receive my change, which never came. I was running late to work by this point so I told him to go ahead and just keep the change and left (he wound up with about a $12 tip which I wouldn’t have given if I had any say). I finally make it home with what I think is my food, only to open it and find I was given what looked like chicken fried rice. I called and told the gentleman on the phone that I was given the wrong food. He said “that’s how we make it here”. I told him Pad Woon Sen according to their website and menu is a noodle dish and the food I received was only rice and vegetables and the wrong protein and asked if I could come back and exchange it for what I ordered and paid for. He eventually told me again that’s how they make it there and hung the phone up on me. Wound up spending about $30 on food I didn’t even eat because I was given the wrong dish and they refused to...
