Worst place to get coffee EVER. I drive thru Reno periodically and love to stop and get coffee and take in the city. I have a place i normally go but they were very busy so i decided to try a new place. Found this place thru an online search for best coffee places (of which my go to place by the river downtown scored higher) and i find it ludicrous that it scored high at all.
I wanted a simple latte 20 oz nonfat add shot. Shouldn't be difficult. The very unfriendly pink haired person at the counter rattled off they only have one size (!!??!!) and they don't have nonfat milk just, and she spoke so fast im not sure i heard correctly though i asked her to repeat herself, whole/soy/almond and goat?! And the reason they don't carry nonfat...because it doesn't foam/steam very well?!?! Ive never had a foamy almond milk beverage. In fact...lattes aren't inherently foamy....maybe its me but i didn't seem to have a problem at any other craft coffee house and I've been to many... I'm from Seattle. I get the above drink nonfat complete with the pretty swirly design on top...oh wait they must be lying... that design is in foam... maybe ALL the coffee houses are lying to me and I'm drinking a WHOLE milk latte!
Oh and there was something odd between her and the other person at the counter. He couldn't begin to make a drink unless on her say so. Weird.
I ended up reluctantly purchasing a regular coffee that was decent and the only reason for 2 stars at all. This place is a joke. Just don't bother. They don't...
Read moreFound the atmosphere a bit cold and coffee a little bitter (4/5 Green Stars) Old world coffee on California St. is very much coffee focused – there were two lemon bars and some mini cinnamon rolls at the counter. But they also partner with Full Belly Deli, next door, to bring breakfast burritos and wraps, etc. I had a Gibraltar and it wasn't as enjoyable as the one from Coffeebar – it had a bitterness that required extra sugar to make it drinkable for me. It was also pricey – $4.75 for my Gibraltar, including a 75 cent charge for the small amount of oat milk. The atmosphere was okay – there were a few people working inside and outside but it felt a bit cold overall. I think it needs a bit of work to make it welcoming and cosy and to soften their hipster vibe.
I’m also giving Old world coffee 4/5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact for the following reasons:
• Many of their coffees are sourced from farms or co-ops that are doing good things for their workers and local communities (you have to go to their website to read these stories as the coffee packaging doesn’t provide much useful info). • Some of their beans are organic, while others lack information on sustainability (shade, agriculture, etc.). • The coffee packaging itself is a bit excessive (for only 8 ounces of beans) and not-compostable. • The 75 cent charge for choosing more sustainable plant-based milks is excessive. Especially for the small amount of milk required in drinks like...
Read moreOld World Coffee is a solid contender in the emerging Reno third wave coffee scene. Located on trendy California street, steps from the main drag of Midtown, it offers excellent coffee and a clean atmosphere to study, relax, and sip on your joe.
OWC roasts their own beans at a separate location and you can purchase all their offerings in store. The baristas know their stuff and make a consistent pour, a hallmark of any legitimate third wave spot. Along with the coffee essentials, they have a small offering of baked goods sourced from a local bakery called Butter & Salt. The price for a standard latte is $4.50, slightly higher than other places in town, but still in a similar price range.
The interior design is clean and modern with wood accents to add a bit of warmth. There are several tables and ample space to spread out and not be distracted by other patrons; great for individual or group work. They have decent WiFi (tested 20 down / 5 up) and upbeat background music. It's a place that screams productivity, where you can clear your mind and get stuff done. It doesn't, however, have big comfortable couches to relax on, so don't expect a winter lodge vibe.
Old World Coffee is a great place for coffee enthusiasts, for sure I'll...
