Big Herm's Kitchen and Catering — Restaurant in Richmond

I love the way they do the fried chicken tenders thing. Not like a fast food ordeal. Remind me of the down south North Carolina South Carolina Georgia idea of fried chicken. Collard greens is not bad, have a little spice which makes it nice. Sweet Potato pie has a twist of Big Herm’s idea, little different than the deep southern idea of Sweet Potato pie...notwithstanding not bad. Mic and cheese do not do nothing for me. Maybe because I am 74 years old and can remember how it tasted back in the day when it was cheaper to make it right. New school generation don’t know the original idea of making and tasting it. Cornbread is Big Herm’s Kitchen idea and recipe which is Okay. Over all I will be glad to order again from the downtown Richmond Hilton hotel and after moving to downtown Richmond. Mixed review. It’s a stand alone place/restaurant, only available for take out. Major issues with delivery. Prices are nice, portions are great, food is always fresh/made to order/hot. My favorite foods are the mashed sweet potatoes and oyster Po boy sandwich, don’t recommend the fries they are always burnt. It’s black owned and I always support, but I absolutely hate the location. It sucks! No parking, construction in the way, one way street. Also, lines are always big and long so it takes time to order and receive the food, and they have weird times of operation. The in person times don’t match online. I feel like if it was better managed and run, it would be really successful. I their place should/could be open longer. Someone needs to also facilitate the staff to be more friendly when customers place orders. Lastly, be prepared to use the bathroom almost immediately after eating, all that grease runs...

This was my first time at Big Herm’s and I will be back whenever I’m craving soul food. They’re one of the few places open on Monday’s which is a nice perk and the food is great for the most part. I ordered the variety basket with mac and cheese,collard greens, and mashed sweet potatoes. Everything was so good I’d taken a couple bites before I remembered to snap a picture. The cornbread was so sweet and buttery and the Mac and cheese was baked really well. The greens were a little heavy on the vinegar which I don’t mind but if you don’t like vinegar don’t go with these. I also ordered the wings which were on a special today and they weren’t my favorite. The Buffalo sauce wasn’t the traditional taste I was expecting, but they were still okay as long as you don’t go in with that expectation. I placed my order and had my food in about 20 minutes.
