Hokulia Shave Ice - Riverdale — Restaurant in Riverdale

Used to be my favorite place to go get a shaved ice, but last summer and the few I have had this season have been super disappointing. Honestly, I know these kids work so hard, so I try and cut them some slack for most of them it's their first job, and they are trying hard I think they would benefit from some more training and help last year they offered a card you buy 5 and for the price you get 6 and that's only 1 trip when we take the grandbabies that's almost enough for everyone anyway no one knew how to sell them and when I finally went on a day that an adult was there to sell it when I went back to use it no one could cash it out because they didn't know how. And the last few like 10 I have ordered have been just snow inside, no flavoring beyond the outside layer, and that's always super disappointing hopefully things will get better again but for now I will probably be going to Zeppies for Italian ice when they have tigers...

First off the flavored shaved ice is ok, thus the 2 stars. The problem I had with this place was the fact that the girl rang up our order and after swiping my card & turning the tablet towards me said, "Ok, now do you want to tip 15, 20 or 25%?". I should of said; why, you haven't done anything yet. I've never had a food service place straight up ask me to my face how much I wanted to tip them. Especially not a mobile snow cone hut. 15-25% tips are for full service restaurants, not some teenage kid serving you flavored ice. Have you ever walked into a restaurant and had them ask you to tip them before getting your food? Of course not. It was very off-putting and we will not return just for that reason. I'll stick...

Seriously the best place. I’ve probably driven by here a hundred times and never stopped. Today I did and was extremely impressed. Not only by the product, but more importantly by the service. Huge shout out to Tayson! Tayson was simply inspiring. Extremely friendly and funny, he made awesome recommendation. Just trust him. The shaved is was amazing and delicious. When you go, you MUST get the snow cap. It makes the shaved ice creamy and delicious. Awesome that credit card is accepted, it it’s a bummer that I wasn’t able to leave a tip from my card.
