This is an unfortunate review to write with so many rave reviews. However, it's a one off experience with me being out of town. I specifically targeted Bread Craft with its stellar reviews.
I parked off street which was free. The business has a small sign and larger over the business entry. The walk up was debris free.
The interior was somewhat compact, but a few tables were available for eat in which I planned. I'm confident they have a heavy takeout business with bakery items.
The case of baked goods looked fantastic! However, I had my eye on their Eggs Florentine which can be difficult to find on a menu.
Ordering is by counter and I found the woman to be friendly. I ordered the Eggs Florentine and coffee and was given a mug for self serve pour and a table number. I thought the bill was affordable,
With few customers and not had anything to eat at 1 PM I hoped for them to roll out my dish quickly. About 20 minutes went by and a nearby table received their order. However, just moments later the waitress realized her mistake, but it was too late. She gave my order to another table that took a bite. The waitress apologized, but this point I was starved. No offer of a pastry etc. Unfortunately the coffee was lukewarm and not tasty.
A manager I believe said hello, but no apology if he even knew. I mean the place is small of course he did. Another 20 minutes or so and my food hit the table with no additional apology or again offer of pastry etc. Even if it was to go.
On the bright side my eggs Florentine dish was amazing! It saved the review from going under water. I switched coffee to the dark roast which was hot, but still not tasty.
I would not return or recommend. 2.5 rounding up with a...
Read moreI have now been to Bread Craft on three different occasions, and the baking has been impressive each time. For my first visit, I had breakfast with a co-worker and tried the croissant with spinach, feta, and artichoke. The croissant was light, flaky, buttery and delicious. My previous two visits have been for lunch and I’ve ordered paninis both times, which were both very good. The Turkey Florentine Panini was my favorite of the two. It comes with turkey, bacon, spinach, artichokes, feta, and fresh mozzarella on flatbread. I don’t even like artichokes but I guess I do when I’m ordering them at Bread Craft. The other panini I’ve tried is the Roast Beef, which was also good, but I would recommend the Turkey Florentine if I had to choose between the two. It makes such a difference when the bread is one of the highlights of a sandwich, and that’s what you get at Bread Craft. Sandwiches are around $6.50 and are served with a side of a salad I don’t really know how to describe. I think it’s pickled cauliflower and mixed with a couple other vegetables.
The atmosphere at Bread Craft is great because it feels like an authentic, European café. It reminds me of the cafes I’ve visited in France and Switzerland. The fresh pastries on display, baskets of fresh baguettes, unique loaves that are only made on certain days of the week, and a friendly staff that knows its customers by name all help create this unique vibe. Even the touch of having small, round tables that are designed for parties of two help create the European café ambiance. It’s something people probably would have laughed at in Downtown Roanoke 15 years ago, but it now appears to...
Read moreAmazing Bakery and cafe. The food: Picked up a chocolate croissant, eclair, chicken biscuit, and the chorizo & eggs cocotte for breakfast. The croissant was rich, buttery and flaky with a lovely dark chocolate filling that wasn't at all bitter. Just melted in the mouth goodness. The eclair had real pastry cream that was luscious, with a lovely dark chocolate coating on top of the shell that balanced the pastry cream interior. The chicken biscuit was a surprise find and really really good. The battered chicken breast on the biscuit was large with perfect flavor and not rubbery or dry, while the biscuit was also a good size, fluffy and not dense, dry or starchy. The chorizo was spicy and fresh, the poached eggs were cooked perfectly and the bread was a perfect conduit for mopping up all the glorious sauce/yolk in the bowl. I could happily eat here every day if I lived closer. The process: As others have mentioned it's a good idea to arrive early or you could miss out on some of the pastries like we did. We arrived at 930. Took maybe 10 minutes to get through the ordering line. We watched the last of a few pastries disappear as we progressed forward. Seating didn't look promising as all the tables were full with at least three table occupied with squatters who were talking with empty dishes in front of them. We lucked out and two squatters left just after we completed ordering. Chairs are comfortable, tables are a good size. Space between tables is great and you're not right on top of...
