Their Pho lacked a lot of ingredients. The beef jerky had too much sugar. Their Lad Nar was not Lad Nar. It had regular broccoli and huge pieces of carrots in it. My first time at this place and I will not return again. If you are going to have a high priced menu, I really suggest the taste of your food should go right along side it. Also, you should worry less about people stealing your utensils and worry more about improving your food..... Wednesday August 25, 2021 Revised comment to your rudeness. I did find a place that makes Authentic Lao food. The place is named "Lao Kitchen" they are located on Broadway. You and your bad cook should try this place, maybe you guys could somehow learn to become better cooks. Please don't embarrass your cook by calling him a chef. There is a difference between the title. Btw, my Lao mom warned me not to eat at RockPho'd. I almost forgot to mention. Your broccoli was yellowing, that's when it is in the process of rotting. Really disgusting! People like your food because they don't know what it is like to actually eat authentic Lao/Thai/Vietnamese food. You can put any Asian looking dish in front of your customers and call it what you want and they'll think they are eating authentic Southeast Asian food. Let me be the (first), well, maybe not the first one to tell you this - The food in your restaurant is not real Southeast Asian food!! Our waitress whom was serving us needs a major...
Read moreWe tried the beef phó, house special phó, and the papaya salad (Som Tum )
Having lived in Southeast Asia for 10 years and traveled throughout Vietnam, I’m quite familiar with the ingredients and frequently cook many Southeast Asian dishes at home. So as a visitor to Rockford, I was excited to try some local Vietnamese food.
The Phô was fantastic—the flavor was rich and well-balanced. The flank steak beef was tender and the brisket & (mystery) meatballs added to the special house option were also perfectly cooked (although the brisket had a little too much fat for my liking). The veggies served on the side were perfect and abundant. Loves the included chili oil, flakes, black soy sauce and Sriracha.
The papaya salad (som tum) on the other hand, was underwhelming. The dish had waaay too much fish sauce for my taste, this may be a one off. But having used it regularly, for the umami that it adds, we found this over powering. While the portion was generous it was inedible. Less fish sauce and sprinkle of crushed roasted peanuts and cilantro would’ve been a nice finishing touch, moving forward.
I could eat the phó over and...
Read moreWhen visiting with my friend in the Rockford area, we make a point to visit a local Asian restaurant and lately we've been hooked on Rock Pho'd. The atmosphere is great - it's relaxed, not too noisy so it's easy to have conversations with others at the table while waiting for your food.
I always start with the Crab Rangoon and have Panang Curry, typically with tofu because I really enjoy tofu when prepared properly. It's well seasoned here and absorbs the spices and liquids well. It tastes great, satisfyingly filling, and is a good value.
I have 2 knocks which together brought my rating to 4 stars - first, the appetizer and main course came out at the same time and second, the dishes used for the main course didn't really work. You'll see from my picture that a very liquid-based dish came out on a plate with a side of rice, also on a plate. I'd much rather see this in a bowl so I can mix my rice and curry together.
Overall, I highly recommend Rock Pho'd for anyone looking for a nice, satisfying dish for a good price and...
