Casual delicious Indian food. Huge portions, we had enough to take home for another meal. They have a great variety of veggie, meat, poultry, and seafood dishes. They can make things vegan on request!
If you are new to Indian cuisine, it would be good to get the buffet so you can try a variety of dishes, but know the buffet is only during lunch 11-2:30 Mon-Fri.
Otherwise, it's served family style, so get a few entrees to share (half portions if there are four or less people unless you want leftovers).
Start with the samosas (fried savory pastry stuffed with indian spiced potatoes and peas, dipped in the sweet tamarind sauce- think thin sweet BBQ sauce) or pakoras (fried veggie fritters).
Get a side of garlic naan (flat bread), for sopping up whatever delicious sauce comes with your entree, this is a must.
For entrees: try the Bangan bhartha (stewed eggplant and tomatoes), dal makhni (lentils and beans in cream sauce), the ever popular Butter Chicken (spiced cream sauce), shrimp masala, or lamb curry.
You get a choice of spice heat: mild (probably a level 1- dunno never tried it), medium (like a level 3 at a Thai restaurant, or for those of us that like heat but prefer to keep our tastebuds), and hot (why? why would you do this to yourself?).
Classic drink is Hot Masala Chai, or they have water and soft drinks too.
I only wish I'd seen the Blue Zones sign that said we could get brown basmati instead of white, half portions, and substitute dairy for plant-based milks.
I took a star off for atmosphere (interior could really use a remodel or TLC), but owners are really nice. They were very thoughtful to my 8 yr old when she was trying dishes for the first time and wasn't thrilled - they brought her some yogurt (think lemony ranch dip) that she then proceeded to eat half the naan by dipping it in the yogurt, and then drank my chai. Next time I'd get her the chicken tandoori kebobs and mango lassi (mango yogurt smoothie).
We will definitely...
Read moreThis might be the best food in all of Douglas County. The tandoor oven does things that you will never be able to recreate at home.
The staff is extremely friendly, helpful, and attentive. Walking into the restaurant, your nose will immediately affirm the good decision you just made.
Even the simpler things like the basmati rice seem complex, and of course the naan is ridiculously good. So many entree options, and not only can they make so many vegetarian options full vegan, they portion extremely well. Half orders on many dishes are available for those who want amazing food, but aren't ready to go home stuffed to the gills, making lunch here an ideal option as well.
If you haven't tried Indian food, this place will give an experience that will have you kicking yourself for not trying it sooner. The flavors are unrivaled, and you can eat knowing you are filling yourself with...
Read moreAbout 18 months ago a good friend took me to Shanti's and I have been a big fan ever since. It has become my family's preferred go-to. The food is always fresh, made with care, and beyond what else you can fine in Roseburg. Trust me, I was raised on mac and cheese and McDonald's, so even trying this place once was a shock to my palate. A wonderful and continually delecious shock! My family's order is usually 1 bread basket (4 different naans!), 1 order of vegetable pakora (this is veggies in fried batter!) 1-2 orders of paneer pakora (yo- this is like someone took mozzarella sticks and made them gourmet!) 1 order of butter chicken medium spicy (when I first imagined butter chicken it was an image of a KFC drumstick being dipped in butter and just...no, but this dish is savory and filling!). The portions are great, the price is just right, and everything reheats up well. Not...
