Used to love this place! Unfortunately it’s been at least a year since I’ve eaten at this location on 7th & 4th. But make no mistake, I’m no stranger. I’ve probably dined-in (or in my car old-school drive-up style) close to 100 times in my life.
Tonight unfortunately might be the last time. Ever.
Food was sub-par. Service was a joke.
My go-to is the grilled tuna & cheese. They used to perfect this staple! Buttery grilled bread, melted cheese and … cold tuna! Yummmmmmmm Tonight the tuna was just as hot as the grilled bread. Yuk. Not a fan of hot tuna in a melt. I asked if they had made a change to the menu as I’d never had it with hot tuna before (ever. 90+ times ever.) and the waitress asked me if I “just didn’t remember as it has always been hot”. Ummm what?
I ordered another one (specifying cold tuna) as I didn’t want to leave with the hot tuna as my last bite. When she brought it out, she made a snarky remark asking if that’s “how I would like it made?” as if it was a totally foreign request out of left field that they’d never received before. She even waited until I took a bite before she turned and shrugged at the manager like they bent way over backwards for me. Additionally it took me looking for my waitress for 10minutes before she came back out to flag her down to get a refill of the delicious cherry rootbeer. (That cherry rootbeer is actually the only reason I gave a second star, btw. So good). Last, I know we were within the hour of closing time but I can’t stand when employees in a restaurant sweep the floor around you while you’re eating. We’ll, you guessed it. Not only did she start sweeping, but it was deliberate, forceful floor sweeping aimed right toward our table and the ones behind us (where othered were still eating). My whole family started feeling their eyes burning (something in the floor maybe? Cleaning agent? Chemicals of some sort?) and so we’re mine. My nose immediately stuffed up and I just needed to get out of there. Totally disgusting and uncalled for. Not to mention extremely rude. Anyway, we paid our $85 tab (and even tipped reluctantly) but sadly, it’ll most likely be the last time I step foot in that once-amazing, historic diner on 7th E & 4th S.,...
Read more😒 They Put the Grr in Burger We visited Hires Big H today (400 S 700 E) hoping to share a nice meal. Unfortunately, our experience was anything but.
We started by ordering a Golden Veggie H burger, which includes a small order of onion rings (as shown on the menu). The carhop informed us they only offered one size of onion rings, so we said ok. We then asked for the burger to be cut in half since we were sharing. The carhop read the order back correctly, and we thought all was clear.
However, what we received was a sad little sandwich of only cheese, lettuce, and tomato on a bun, though it was cut in half as requested. My husband went to the carhop entrance to tell the kitchen. After a significant wait, a woman who appeared to be a manager came to our car. We explained the issue, and after another considerable wait, she returned with what seemed to be our correct burger. When my husband reminded her we'd asked for it to be cut in half—I saw her SNATCH the burger from his hand— and storm off without a word. She eventually returned with the halved burger, but at that point, we'd lost our appetite due to her incredibly rude attitude. My husband told her we no longer wanted the meal, explaining it was "because of your attitude."
The manager then said “It’s not you”, so while we were disappointed and shocked by the manager's behavior, I suddenly felt badly for her—the carhop didn’t seem to know the menu and the kitchen who let the order be delivered without the main ingredient— I realize everyone has difficult days, and ours and theirs converged today. We’ve been going there for years; I’m probably more willing than my husband to go again, but not...
Read moreUpdate on Feb 2023 went back after a year and was really disappointed to see that the hamburger and the service has continued to go downhill. We ordered two hamburgers with onion rings, when she brought it out to the car there was one hamburger and two orders of onion rings … The food was warm and the hamburgers were dry tasteless and over cooked. On top of all that they were way over priced at $7.50 or $14 with onion rings. I will definitely not be going back to hires anytime soon
2years ago…. I was surprised today when I went to Hires big H on seventh and fourth to discover they wanted $10 for a burger and fries. I mean the burger is OK it’s just not worth 10 bucks. In This day and age of specialized burger shops Hires doesn’t cut it. It’s the same old place it’s always been for the five decades I’ve been going there and I can say without a doubt my experience today has proved that they are way overpriced in comparison to their competition – I’ve had just as good at McDonald’s.
My big H was a thin, maybe 1/8 lb on an oversize bun with more lettuce and tomatoes than hamburger. I guess they think they’re going to live on tradition and they probably will for a while. I just don’t think enough people will continue to return and pay this for a hamburger with a...
