I’ve begun to accept — fitfully — that swimming with the current is easier on the nerves. I can’t swim, not really. Not in water. But this bit of wisdom has taken decades to land.
San Antonio greeted me with its usual heat. The drive alone, the parking, the irritated body dragging itself from one inconvenience to the next, in search of comfort. A night’s rest sorted it out. I woke clear-headed and hungry.
I found Delicious Indian Cuisine and Bar the way one does on a road trip — by luck and Google. Parking was another drain (Alamo Parking, dashboard slip to be returned), but by then I was resigned. The surrender came easier.
Inside: a clean space, 90s Bollywood songs playing like someone had rewound my adolescence. Ashok brought the food — paneer karahi, paneer kulcha, onions, chilies, lime — quietly, attentively. The food was good. More than that. It was the kind of meal that doesn’t announce itself but insists on being remembered.
I ate the kulcha again that evening in my own kitchen. The next morning, some of the leftover rice and paneer karahi went to my handyman, Hector. He said it reminded him of his time in New York, friends from Bangladesh who lovingly called him gandu, the scent of basmati in the midst of construction. We talked rice. I told him I loved it the way Bengalis do — with reverence.
Sometimes, a meal is sustenance. Other times, it ties a few lives together for a moment or two — mine, Ashok’s, Hector’s. This was one of those times.
Verdict: go. If not for the food (which is very good), then for the small win you’ll take...

We had the Garlic Naan, Chicken Tikka Masala, Chicken 65, and the Vegetable Biryani Rice.
Our appetizer was the Chicken 65, and it blew me away. At first bite, the spices seemed mild, but then the flavor unfolded into a perfectly spiced, well-salted fried chicken topped with fried peppers and (what I think were) basil leaves. Absolutely stellar. The Garlic Naan was another standout. I’m usually not a fan of doughy naan, but this was spot-on; crispy on the bottom, buttery, and topped with perfectly toasted garlic that had punch without the acidity.
The Chicken Tikka Masala came out piping hot. We ordered everything medium spice, which was perfect. Like the other dishes, the flavor started mellow and quickly built into a rich, warming powerhouse. A fantastic version of a classic.
But the real star of the night was the Vegetable Biryani. I’ll be honest, I’ve always hated tofu. Not anymore, not from this place. This dish completely changed my mind. The tofu was seasoned beautifully, never dry or pasty, and the rice itself was vibrant, colorful, and full of flavor. Every bite hit the right notes. Special commendation to the raita… It was the perfect palate cleanser.
All in all, the food was phenomenal and the host was such a nice person. We’ll definitely be coming back soon, and next time, we’re...
