I’ve stayed at the Crockett Hotel three times, once over 11 years ago, and twice recently for the Shakira concert at the Alamodome (which was canceled a few weeks ago, but she finally performed Saturday night!).
If you’re looking for a hotel within walking distance of the Alamodome, the Alamo, Rivercenter Mall, and all the main attractions, I’d definitely recommend this one. You really can’t beat the price for the location.
I’ve also stayed at the Menger Hotel across the street, but in my opinion, the Crockett feels more updated. I really like the suites with two beds and a couch—the rooms are super spacious, which comes in handy when you’re traveling with kids.
If I had to suggest anything, I’d recommend clearing out the shower drains—they could definitely drain faster. Also,, it would be nice if the rooms had a microwave and safe (for valuables, money, or somewhere safe to put their gun if they carry (since its legal here).
Now, the reason for my room rating—after we got back from the Shakira concert, my husband spotted something crawling across the table. It turned out to be a cockroach. Totally gross and definitely not something you want to see in your room. However, I’ll add that I stayed in this exact same room just a couple of weeks ago (for Shakira’s second canceled concert—yes, the one she canceled 40 minutes before the doors were supposed to open) and we never saw a single bug then. Who knows—maybe it came from another room or another guest. Either way, I’d recommend closing off that floor and having it treated just to be safe. It wouldn't turn me away from booking the Crockett again if I needed to see another concert at the Alamodome again, but my husband on the other hand... he wouldn't give it another shot. He was grossed out. To each their own. Since I was in the very same room a few weeks ago, I am just assuming a guest brought it with them. So there could be more or maybe there is not... who knows.
As for the staff, the front desk was friendly and helpful in person. But emailing the hotel was a bit frustrating a few weeks ago. I emailed with a specific question, and their reply didn’t actually answer what I asked—and I don’t even think their reply was sent on the same day. The manager did try calling me back, but since they used a personal phone, I didn’t recognize the number and they didn’t leave a voicemail... which means I didn't answer and assumed it was a spam call. I’d suggest using the hotel’s main phone line so the Crockett shows up on caller ID or call history. It makes it easier for guests to know who’s calling.
I actually saw a woman working in the office during my stay this weekend (possibly the same person who called me before), and I’d recommend she keeps Outlook or whatever email program they use open throughout the day to stay on top of guest emails.I am a recruiter and receive hundreds of emails a day, I find this very helpful when dealing with candidates. If a guest emails, it just makes sense to respond from the hotel’s email address, directly answering their question as soon as she has a second. Then its done and out of the way. It also keeps the door open for follow-up questions she may have with the guests. The hotel isn’t so large or busy that guests shouldn’t get a response within a couple of hours. Fast replies make a big difference when people are trying to plan their stay (or trying to choose the right hotel for them and/or their family) and may have limited free time. I have a full time day job and two kids with a busy schedule that hog all my free time with their extra curricular activities. Therefore, I am not a phone person. I handle everything through quick texts or email messages in the spare minute(s) I randomly have here and there. Anyways thats just my advice that would help improve a customers experience and keep...
Read moreI had high hopes for this place. For the price I paid, I had a really lackluster experience. The gentleman who was checking me in spoke extremely low, mumbled, and fast. I also had a difficult time getting checked in because my wallet was stolen and I only had one form of ID. I will accept part of the blame for this because obviously, it's my fault my wallet is missing. I explained the situation to him and without missing a beat, he didn't even try to help me. He immediately said he could cancel my reservation. It's 11pm at night, I didn't have a wallet, and I paid upfront and in full for my room. Even after giving him my military ID (which I keep separate from my wallet) he still wouldn't accept it. I had to ask him to check with his manager and he did... then checked in with no problem. Such a pain checking in and if he had just used common sense, both of us could have saved frustration.
Then he said there was a $75/day incidental fee which must be paid up front. I once again explained that I didn't have my wallet - why couldn't they just bill the card I gave them on file when I booked the room? He said the cash would be returned to me upon checkout. Whatever, I paid the cash. I had to ask about parking because it wasn't proactively explajned. He told me the card on file would.be billed $45/day for valet parking. After almost 25 minutes of back and forth, finally went to my room.
The room was alright, it's old and historic. Exactly what I expected. I was not expecting construction to wake me up at 5 in the morning. There was also this alarm that kept going off intermittently throughout the day and night! I couldn't tell if it was in the hallway or outside. Either way, it was obnoxious and loud. The room gets very cold and I'm pretty sure it's haunted (but that's a whole different story).
Location was great, the rivercenter mall is a 60 second walk away. The Alamo is also within walking distance. The entire riverwalk is within walking distance. If you want to avoid driving so much, it's in a great location. The servers at the tavern are incredibly nice and they proactively offer military discounts which was nice and unexpected.
Lastly, upon checkout, I returned to collect my cash. The receptionist said that parking would be taken from my cash and I would get the remainder. I once again asked why was my card not being billed; I gave them a card on file to cover all these expenses. I like to keep my cash on me for emergencies. He explained there was no card on file... how did I get a room then? I told him the receptionist who checked me in told me parking would be taken from my card. He repeated his answer. I accepted his answer, got my little bit of cash and moved on.
Location was amazing. The people working the front desk could use some help and they need to properly disclose how their operations, well, operate so people can plan accordingly. I would recommend staying somewhere else but it's also a great location. Just be prepared that your stay may...
Read moreI stayed in Room 526 the night of 7/26/25. With the downtown one way streets, seemingly endless construction and road closures, it's hard for even a local to get to. The hotel is on a one way street narrowed by construction. Upon our arrival, the street was blocked by a stopped commercial vehicle, so we were able to park ourselves. I ran into the lot security and mentioned we were staying in the Crockett, he okayed me, but said parking fee will be assessed upon check in. No problem.||We walked maybe 10-20 yards to the entrance. At check-in I mentioned that we were already parked. I told the man the number of the space and was about to give my license plate number when he sucked his teeth and hissed with displeasure that the hotel is valet parking only. I mentioned that I understood, and was perfectly willing to pay the fee despite the fact that I already parked.||That wasn't good enough. I had to go get my car and bring it to the valet and let them park it. I leaned back and pointed outside that you can see the vehicle from the entrance. He was insistent. I spoke to the valet and was told I could cut through a portion of the parking lot to get to the valet, but this time, the shortcut drive was blocked. Luckily this time Bonham Street was clear and I was able to pull up to the valet to let them re-park it. I just felt the whole scenario was ridiculous and the clerk's attitude was petulant and petty.||The room was spacious and clean. The AC worked well and wasn't unusually loud. The bed was decently comfortable, but in a more spring-like way rather than padded. Linens were clean, but thread-bare. Decor wasn't bad, but it wasn't luxurious either.||Headed out for an evening event, the hallway had a strong odor of burnt cannabis, which another family commented on as they were exiting as we were.||There's just not a whole lot to do or see at the hotel itself. There's a restaurant/tavern that we tried. Menu was limited, but the food and service was good. Prices were reasonable.||Pool is across the valet entrance next to the parking lot. We didn't feel comfortable trying it.||The one plus is that the hotel is a short walk or short Uber drive to most tourist attractions downtown, but I've been to some new Best Westerns or Hampton Inns that were nicer. Also judging from some of the other guests, there was a "rougher" crowd here. Would I stay here again? No. Would I recommend it? Probably not. The "Parking Na-i" really set a bad tone for the stay. First impressions are important, Crockett Hotel, and you failed miserably. It costs nothing to...
