A Plant-Based Paradise in San Antonio: Plantaquería
During my recent trip to San Antonio for the Final Four, I discovered an absolute gem - Plantaquería. As someone who appreciates innovative applications of technology to everyday life, I was impressed by how this restaurant has revolutionized traditional Mexican cuisine through plant-based innovation.
Located in downtown San Antonio at 124 Broadway, this vegan Mexican restaurant exceeded all expectations. What started as a small batch vegan tamal company has blossomed into a full-service establishment offering incredible plant-based versions of beloved Mexican dishes without compromising on flavor.
The handmade corn tortillas were among the best I've ever tasted - perfectly soft yet sturdy enough to hold their generous fillings. I became particularly addicted to their breakfast tacos, which feature remarkably satisfying vegan eggs and their homemade spicy salsa that adds just the right kick.
The barbacoa and carne asada tacos deserve special mention - the texture and flavor profile were so spot-on that I had to remind myself I was eating plant-based food! Their approach to vegan cheese is equally innovative, with a technique that crisps one side to create a wonderful textural contrast.
Beyond the exceptional food, what made Plantaquería truly special were the owners, Sophia and Michael. Their genuine warmth and hospitality created an inviting atmosphere that made me feel immediately welcome. Their passion for promoting heart-healthy, cholesterol-free versions of traditional favorites shines through in every aspect of the restaurant.
I also appreciated their commitment to sustainability and community - from locally-roasted coffee beans sourced from Indigenous women in Mexico to their convenient downtown location with helpful parking guidance.
If you're visiting San Antonio - vegan or not - Plantaquería is a must-visit destination that proves plant-based eating can be both delicious and satisfying. I'll certainly be returning on my next visit to...
Read moreOne of the things that I absolutely cannot stand is when a place of business does not honor their publicly posted, online, and on their door, hours of operation. If you are not going to honor your posted hours, do the public the courtesy of also PUBLICLY posting that you close early or stop serving before the hours you’ve posted. I work fairly late which makes it difficult to stop by this eatery before they close. However, on this occasion, despite knowing I would get there close to 15 minutes before they closed, and making the mistake that they would honor their hours, I proceeded to the eatery. My wife had also tried calling and placing an order ahead of time, but wouldn’t you know, no phone number available. Do she tried ordering online, but, apparently you must order an hour before they close, otherwise, you can’t do that either. Such a disappointment. My wife is vegan and loves the food, and had her heart set on getting something from them this evening, but hey, we tried. It would have been nice to know their true hours that your allowed to order, but maybe if the opportunity arises in the future and we can arrive two hours before they close, I’ll have the chance to get my wife a meal from a place she really likes, but that left her really disappointed in...
Read moreI’m leaving a 3 star review because i was just really rooting for this place to do it for me and it really just did not. I have had some of plantaquerias food at pop ups and thought it was pretty good. But this time was not.
San Antonio is a taco crazy town and if your gonna make it your tacos have to go above and beyond. I know this is a small business and i’m really rooting for it but there’s a million other tacos places where i can get creative for a vegan option or get a decent to amazing tasting papa ranchera on maíz with rapid service.
my food wasn’t hot, the flour tortillas were chewy, either over or undercooked or not enough baking soda or something, I can’t really say what it was they were just overall not very appetizing, the salsas were bland, lacking flavor and not a hint spicy. The papas and eggs on the Tejana taco were warm at best, not very hot. We were the only patrons and it felt like our two tacos took a while to prepare. To top it all off, the inside is absolutely filled with smoke that is burning my eyes. The big saving grace was absolutely the barbacoa. it was really really truly incredible, texture, taste. Spot on. But what good is a taco if the tortilla isn’t?
I’d love to come by again and hopefully have my mediocre...
