all i can say is: I LOVE NUTELLA as an Italian i have an addiction to it, and one way i really love eating Nutella is on a Crepe... so my wife thought: "what better place for a Crepe than an authentic French Place?"
well, reality is that between Italians and French there has been a timeless rivalry on who cooks better, so in a sort of truce attempt, i decided to go for it... after all Nutella is my favorite thing to eat for Breakfast, and Nutella Crepes is definitely among my top 3 favorite Breakfast meals, so lets make Italia and France friends for a little bit!
... my Wife ordered first, then as i ordered, i asked for: "a Nutella Crepe... with Extra Nutella"
To this, the lady at the counter replied: "No toppings? Bananas?"
to which i countered: "Hmmm, no thanks, just extra EXTRA NUTELLA"
... and this is the point where things took a bad turn as the counter lady replied with stern tone: "Nutella is really bad for you."
so in my biggest diplomatic effort, i tried to turn it to a joke by replying: "ohh no, it is very good for you, especially for the spirit!"
but she insisted: "NO, it is just bad!"
my wife and i looked at each other perplexed, i guess she isn't much of a jokester or maybe she wasn't having the best day... anyway she punched in the order, i paid and i went to wait at a table.
... the Ambiance of the place is very nice, it is small, but nicely decorated and definitely has a European vibe, it really felt like an authentic place, for that reason i am giving an extra Star to what otherwise would have been a 1 Star review.
I grew up in Europe, and since i was a little kid, i always loved to bite into a Crepe as it oozes Nutella from every corner, and that is what i was expecting.
Ohh Boy... HOW MUCH MY EXPECTATIONS GOT ANNIHILATED
the Crepes arrived, and inside there was a transparent layer of Nutella in it (maybe 2 tea spoons total my Wife estimated)... forget about Nutella oozing, in here i was lucky if at the next bite i found Nutella at all as there were spots that were completely dry (see images for evidence).
And as good of a Crepe someone may cook, a dry Crepe isn't the best of tastes, and maybe it was the disappointment for the lack not just of the "Extra" Nutella, but the lack of "Nutella" entirely, but these Crepes didn't taste much good to me at all, even my Wife tasted it and said they were kinda chalky.
In a first time in my life, i ended up walking away leaving over half my Nutella Crepes on the plate, after all, eating a dry chalky Crepe is not what i consider a good Breakfast especially when it doesn't have THE ONLY TOPPING I ASKED FOR, but also my Wife wasn't too happy with her Pastries either, and ended up leaving almost half there.
We didn't want to argue, plus we had to go catch a flight, so we just left the food on the plates at the table, and walked away.
I ended up having to eat some chocolatey Breakfast at the Airport, and that made me really unhappy... THE TRUCE IS OVER!
!!! here is my final take: nobody, and i repeat, NOBODY walks into a Bakery/Pastry Shop to eat healthy.
No doctor has ever said: "You seem a bit unhealthy, i am prescribing you a diet: make sure you go to a Bakery every morning and order something rich in Custard Cream, Choccolate, Bavarian Cream and Nutella for at least 2 Weeks!" that would just be a dream... WOW WHAT A DREAM!
Yeah, that doesn't exist... the simple basic nature of any Pastry Shop is unhealthy, and we all already know it.
So please: DO NOT scold me for the fact i am ordering a Chocolatey Sugar Rush filled Breakfast, let me deal with the burden of burning off all those extra calories the rest of the day i have ahead of me
I WANTED NUTELLA, and i didn't get it despite me asking for extra (YES i have an addiction, BUT I CAN STOP WHENEVER I WANT!)
so, as per my experience: i definitely do not raccomand this...
Read moreI would like to give zero star, not one. I have no idea how this place has over 4 stars review. This is what happened. I ordered 3 menus with drinks and waited over 40 minutes. When I saw the customers next to us, who I remember came and ordered after I did , get the dishes, even finish the plates and leave, I felt something went wrong. The manager and the server didn't know our food had been served to the wrong table and we had to wait our food to be re-cooked. When I asked the manager to explain what happened, she anoyingly told me that some menus like I ordered(which is french toast and croissant) takes longer time than the simple menus the next table ordered. Really???? It was not a busy morning, after 10 o'clock. She was in a hurry to makes excuses and very reluctant to apologize. I could tell obviously that she is not sorry at all. I was so embarassed without knowing why SHE is mad, I am the person who should be mad at this point. The only reason why I stayed there without refund is because we already spent nearly 1 hour and didn't want to find another place to eat. I wasted my money over $60 and time. Of course things could happen. Don't try to escape uncomfortable situation making excuses to customers. To say sorry should be the first and easiest way to start with. Horrible service and manner. By the way, cafe mocha tasted like light hot chocolate and americano...
Read moreLa Boulangerie is located downtown but is a few streets removed from the crazy tourist trap part of the Riverwalk. I visited on a Saturday morning and although the street it was on seemed kind of dead from the outside, the inside of this bakery was bustling. And let me tell you how authentically French it was. My friend and I came in and gawked at all the desserts. As we decided what to order and were waiting in front of the pastry case to be served, another man walked in, started speaking French fluently to the chef, and promptly cut in front of us. Okay, not a huge deal. Well right after he ordered and paid for his food, before we could get a word in, the lady who took his order disappeared back into the kitchen without as much as an acknowledgment of our presence. Pretty sure we were invisible because we didn't speak French. Minutes passed, and then she came out and promptly served another lady who bought 4 giant baguettes. She disappeared again. A few more minutes passed. Finally, she popped back out and took our order without any sort of apology or mention of the wait. Everything, from the chefs to the Parisian rudeness to the deliciousness of the chocolate almond croissant I picked up -- were all amazingly authentic and such a surprise to find in this city. Be sure to stop by if you're in the area! I can't wait to pay another visit and try some more of their...
