After visiting Mostra Coffee on 4th Avenue in San Diego multiple times, I feel compelled to share my experience. While the coffee here is decent overall, I believe the quality should be more consistent. As a regular macchiato drinker, I’ve noticed that only one out of the 5-6 rotating baristas consistently makes a great macchiato. It’s surprising and frustrating that the quality of the espresso can vary so much depending on who is behind the counter, especially since they all have the same ingredients to work with. This inconsistency is disappointing and detracts from the experience.
Additionally, I’m not a fan of their drip coffee. Mostra Coffee emphasizes single-origin beans, which often have a higher acidity. Personally, I prefer a darker roast, so the drip coffee here doesn’t quite suit my taste. However, I understand that this is subjective and might appeal to those who enjoy more acidic brews.
My biggest concern, though, is their use of paper cups, even for customers who choose to stay and enjoy their coffee on-site. This change, likely implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic, significantly reduces the coffee experience. As someone who particularly enjoys espresso, the thought of it being served in a paper cup was off-putting enough that I didn’t even dare to order it. Espresso cools down quickly in a paper cup, becoming bitter and more acidic, which is far from ideal. For a café that charges premium prices, this is unacceptable. The experience of drinking espresso or any other coffee is diminished when it isn’t served in a proper cup.
Given that Mostra Coffee overlooks 4th Avenue, offering a pleasant view when the windows are open, it’s a shame that the coffee experience inside doesn’t fully match the setting. The inconsistency in drink preparation, the varying quality of the beans, and the use of paper cups all detract from what could be a top-notch café experience. For the premium prices they charge, customers deserve better. It’s time for Mostra Coffee to reconsider some of these choices and offer an experience that truly reflects the quality they...

espresso, delicious price, fair service, good
Finally, another location but this time right in San Diego. For years I've been driving 10/15 north just to get my fix.
BIBINGKA CREME BRÛLÉE LATTE - it had taste, it had body, it had texture, but it didn't have foam art.. its had a creme brulee foam top (for visual brown bubbly looking foam)! The bibingka flavor was subtle but present and not overwhelmingly noticeable. You would have to had a bibingka in your life to recognize the flavor in it. The barista blow torched the sugar on top to make the Creme Brulee layer resting on the espresso. The creme brulee creates texture in the drink and the top breaks down to smaller pieces that come with your sips, giving your mouth a little "espresso forte", nibble-crunching on sweet pieces while sipping down good expresso. Highly recommend!
SENIORITA BREAD (GUAVA) - can someone tell me why on Earth there is no star bread bakeries in San Diego? Maybe i'm spoiled being from the BayArea. My deprived streak for star bread has stopped here when I discovered they sell seniorita bread (guava). It's basically star bread. I could do without the guava as the jam is extra sweet but the bread itself is as soft as a pillow when warmed up and pairs exceptionally well with the bibingka latte or any flavored warm beverage. Recommend!
I'm going to be real, San Diego proper needs more Filipino representation and presents... so, THANK YOU for opening up in Bankers Hill. I don't want to have to drive north or south in pocket neighbors to taste the creativity of my peeps and to see beautiful brown faces behind the bar or sitting at the tables. I'm proud to see it right here, in San Diego proper.
This place is going to be a guilty pleasure for me and will definitely be a regular.
Until...
Read moreMostra was a pretty reasonable coffee shop with some fantastic seating. However both the indoor and outdoor areas were pretty loud as sound echoed badly and I found their coffee to be a little bit on the weaker side. Mostra wasn’t bad, but in my opinion I enjoyed some other coffee shops more.
Order: Cappuccino and Pour Over Price: $11
Review: My wife and I both had several solid hours of work to do before we could get out and explore some more of San Diego and we decided to settle in at Mostra for the first half of that.
The seating at Mosta is pretty interesting because they have three distinct areas. You can sit inside the little café, you can sit in there foyer area, or you can sit outside in an enclosed courtyard that is open to the sky. While all of the seating is very comfortable I think one of the challenges is that it’s all also very loud. Planes fly over the outdoor space on their way to the airport, and then there’s a lot of people talking inside. This isn’t bad but given the design of the space everything echoes a lot and it feels a lot louder than it probably is.
As for the coffee, it was enjoyable but it did feel a little on the weaker side for us. I almost wanted another shot of espresso in the cappuccino, and the pour over just tasted very light and simple.
I definitely wouldn’t say Mostra is bad in any way shape or form I just know that there are several other coffee shops nearby that I...
