My girl and I were driving through Point Loma and we were looking for someplace to eat. Specifically, we were looking for a place that was casual, had outside seating and had good seafood options. She recommended Point Loma Seafood because she had eaten there a long time ago and had a memorable meal.
We were fortunate to find parking in the lot directly in front of this establishment. Looking around, it looks like it would be difficult to find a spot if it were a busy day. But keep in mind that this is during the weekday in October.
We entered and I realized the setup; you order at the front cashier, they call-out your number and you pick-up and seat yourself.
The interior is an entire waiting area, where customers can view all the fresh seafood in the glass cases. Their expansive menu, is posted above these cases and allows for everyone to see what they want at a glance. I did not see any paper menus posted.
Service was friendly and relatively fast.
I ordered a simple fish & chips and my girl ordered a shrimp plate with fries & coleslaw.
The prices were a little up there, as to be expected for a fresh seafood establishment in the area.
We grabbed our food and found seating outside in their patio dining area on the lower-floor. We had just a little view of the marina and it was covered with umbrellas & had napkins & condiments.
My fish was pretty good, but the cuts felt kind of small compared to other places I've visited. I regret not asking g what type of fish it was. It was moist, not too oily and fell apart easy. First bite was good and I had to add lemon & tartar sauce to unlock some of the flavors desired.
My true disappointment came with the "chips" or fries, which were soggy, flavorless (unseasoned) and the coleslaw was "dry" and lacked ANY flavor.
So I felt like I paid over $20 for some "Okay" fish. Not very happy about this.
My girl had a similar experience with her shrimp plate. "Good" shrimp, but the sides were lacking.
I believe that the gem of this place is being able to sit on the upper patio that overlooks the marina and maybe lucking-out on a seafood dish that is full-proof; maybe something like chowder or crab with no sides.
Perhaps they'll improve again and we just went...
Read moreBy far, this was the worst experience I've had so far while checking out seafood spots in San Diego. I had heard so much buzz about Point Loma Seafoods, so I went in with high expectations. Unfortunately, the food completely missed the mark in every way. It's disappointing when a place that comes so highly recommended turns out to be more hype than substance.
To start on a positive note, the service was actually the best part of the visit. The lady who helped us was super friendly and welcoming, which we appreciated. She made us feel comfortable and was patient while we looked over the menu. I honestly wish the food had matched the warmth of the service, but sadly, it didn’t even come close.
The food itself was a total letdown. I ordered a sandwich that looked and tasted like it was just thrown together. The bread wasn't even toasted, it was dry, and the whole thing lacked flavor and any real seafood presence. It was almost like eating a subpar sandwich from a gas station deli. My partner got the shrimp basket with fries, and it didn’t fare any better. The fries looked like they had been sitting under a heat lamp all day, and the fried shrimp tasted like something you'd find at a dive bar on a bad night—not fresh, not seasoned, just greasy and sad.
What made it worse was the overall vibe. It felt like a tourist trap, filled with out-of-towners who maybe don’t know better or have nothing else to compare it to. There was no local charm or standout flavor that would make me want to come back for more. It was one of those meals where halfway through you're already regretting not going somewhere else.
That said, I might give them one more shot—but only to check out the fresh fish market, not to eat there. Maybe that’s where the real value lies, and we just missed it by ordering off the menu. Still, based on this visit, I can’t recommend Point Loma Seafoods to anyone looking for a good seafood meal. It was, without a doubt, the worst one I’ve had since moving...
Read moreNestled in the heart of San Diego's vibrant seaside, Point Loma Seafoods offers a picturesque dining experience with its unbeatable marina views and a breezy, casual atmosphere that’s perfect for a sunny day out. This place is famed for its ultra-fresh seafood, and it's easy to see why—it's a bustling hub for both locals and tourists alike.
The variety of seafood available is impressive, from sushi-grade fish to hearty fried classics. I opted for one of their specialties, and while the flavor was on point, I was a tad disappointed that my dish wasn’t served hot. It seemed like it might have been sitting out a bit before making its way to my table, which was a letdown considering the otherwise high quality of the ingredients.
That said, the outdoor seating really made up for the hiccup in service. Dining with such a splendid view of the marina, watching boats glide by under the San Diego sun, added a special touch to the meal. It’s the kind of setting that makes you appreciate the local charm and vibrant scene of Point Loma.
The service was friendly and efficient, with staff members who were eager to share their recommendations and knowledge about the seafood offerings. It’s a place I would visit again, hoping for a little more attention to the timing of the food service next time.
In conclusion, Point Loma Seafoods remains a solid choice for anyone looking to enjoy fresh seafood in a stunning location. Just a little tweak in the kitchen’s timing, and it could easily be a five-star experience. Definitely worth a visit for the view and the...
