Roxy’s Tacos is a small shop off of C Street in downtown San Diego. I had been wanting to try this place for a while but the lack of parking in the area really made it difficult to justify. Since I was down in the area for jury duty it was a perfect opportunity and, boy, I was not disappointed. When I arrived I was greeted enthusiastically by a young lady working behind the counter who was helping some other guests. It gave me an opportunity to look over the menu for a bit. When it was my turn I chose the Carne Asada Burrito and a single Birria Taco because I wanted to try their birria. I also ordered a Mexican Coke. They have three different salsas, a spicy red, a red and a green. When asked I just said I wanted to spicy and red but the employee asked if I wanted to try the green too so I said yes.

When the food came out I immediately knew I ordered too much. The Birria Taco was a good size and had a really large portion of Birria on it. It comes in the traditional way with onions and cilantro. I am a bit of a Birria snob and was prepared not to like it but it was extremely flavorful and there wasn’t a lot of fat like you find in some Birria. I was impressed and think it’s the best one I’ve had outside of Mexico.

The burrito was really large and the carne asada was tender and well marinated. Of the salsas my favorite ended up being the green which was another surprise as I typically don’t love green salsas. In this one the flavor just really popped in your mouth and made my taste buds tingle. The spicy and the red ones were okay too but the green was the standout. I was told it was a family recipe from Mexico.

I definitely recommend giving Roxy’s a shot if you’re in the area. ...

I was only staying in downtown San Diego one night and was yearning for some authentic SoCal tacos… I’m generally not a fan of SoCal tacos, I prefer flour tortillas that are hand made over the corn which are doubled-up and rubbery. So, I stopped in here, being one of the first customers of the day and the owner was still setting up, but was great! I told him I just wanted to try one carne and one pollo… he asked which type of sauce and I asked for both, hot and medium. He's got a nice little shop with hightop seating (bar style against the window) inside and lots of picnic tables outside. His menu is vast and reasonably priced. His service was excellent! He was enthusiastic and cared about what I thought. My tacos came out, piping hot and fresh. The seasoning on the meats was excellent and perfectly done! He suggested I get guac on them, which I did and it was a GREAT decision! The guac pasted onto the tortilla before loading the meat, onions, and cilantro really added a great, creamy texture and perfect flavor to the whole taco. Each bite was outstanding!

A few months ago I tried many tacos joints in LA and Ontario, only to be disappointed in the traditional, basic taco. I did find the best birria there though. So, I stuck to my belief that Texas tacos are a lot better than SoCal tacos… Until eating here! This place really hit the spot! I’d highly recommend stopping in and trying them for yourself!!

Oh, and his salsas was outstanding, fresh, tasty and the hot was nice...

I rarely feel super compelled to write reviews, but this was easily some of the best Mexican food I’ve ever had, especially as someone who has spent a lot of time in Mexico. The owner was awesome and so friendly; he told me that he gets his ingredients from Tijuana and you can taste the authentic difference 1000%. It’s a family run business and you can truly see and taste how much love and care they put into the food. The michelada and custom potato burrito that I had were OUT OF THIS WORLD. Super flavorful, rich but clean, and delicious food. The fluffy tortillas they use and the breakfast potatoes just melt in your mouth. The salsas are also absolute fire!

I’m vegan and I really appreciated the owner letting me know that they don’t have vegetarian beans, so I did my burrito without beans and didn’t miss them at all. Also so happy that they made sure my burrito, with limited ingredients, was still huge! Not at all like most places that will overcharge you for a veggie burrito and then it comes out tiny. If I lived here I would be here constantly, but I already can’t wait to return! Do yourself and your taste buds a favor, don’t even think about it, if you love good Mexican...
