This is our review from Trip Adviser:
We were married 09/19/14 and honeymooned at the Courtyard Marriott in the Gaslamp District of San Diego, CA 09/19-09/22/14. From the moment we pulled up to the curb to the moment we drove away we were treated like royalty! Every staff member that we encountered was personable, friendly, helpful and courteous. The staff sent up champagne and chocolate covered strawberries on our wedding night and had a beautiful orchid on the platter which we saved to press into our wedding album. One of the bell hops (Kamahl) was kind enough to give us and another couple in our party a guided tour from the basement vault to the panoramic view of the city and bay from the cupola and he was very knowledgeable of the history of this incredibly preserved treasure of a building. When I entered the hotel its beauty took my breath away! I felt like I was in a Moroccan palace! The lobby ceiling tiles were hand painted (I believe with gold gilt), there's a catwalk above the lobby with arched doorways surrounded by intricately carved screens and various colored marble pillars. The front-desk staff (Jesus, Thea and all the others as well as the valet staff) were very accommodating and polite. They provided us with directions and suggestions for sightseeing. We breakfasted in their Lobby Restaurant and were treated to a wide-range of meal selections. I highly recommend the 3-egg omelet! Our server Amber was about the dearest young lady I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. The rooms are gorgeous, spotless and the sheets are crisp and fresh, the towel soft and fluffy. The bed was like a dream! So comfortable with pillow-topped mattress and foam and down-filled pillows. The shower head had settings for water massage (very important after the exhausting week of wedding, preparations, etc!). This hotel is so quiet it felt as if we were the only guests. I didn't hear a peep from any of the other rooms or floors (we stayed on the 15th floor). Nor, did we hear any noise from the streets below and this is a busy metropolitan area. The wi-fi was easy to access and very high-speed. The A/C was exceptional as we were at the end of a heat wave. Once the air was turned on, the room was cooled within minutes. There is so much to do in this area without ever having to drive that the choices are dizzying. I also recommend you try the Flagship Prime Rib Dinner Cruise or the Brunch cruise as well as the ferry to Coronado. The Broadway Pier is a...
Read moreThe hotel staff are accommodating, friendly, courteous, welcoming, earnest, no nonsense, warm and good natured. I really enjoyed interacting with them. I had a great stay. Better than I hoped for. It is historic hotel landmark that used to be a bank. I asked for a quiet, double room, and I got it. It was very quiet, and I expected it to be small by some of the reviews I read, but it was big, with nice, big viewing windows on the 11th floor, city view, letting in good natural light, pleasantly decorated with a mostly white color scheme with good, cheerful color accents, nice big mirror, and with a bigger bathroom than I am used to in other Marriott standard rooms. I am a single, middle aged woman traveller and small in stature. I believe 2 adults (bigger in size than me) would find this room comfortable and adequate. I spent a considerable amount of time in the room, because a heatwave was going on, and the automatic sensing air conditioner worked beautifully. It was a pleasant, restful stay. Despite it being a 1930's building, the plumbing worked great. The drains drained fast, the toilet flushed well and the water was hot immediately out of the hot tap and cold out of the cold tap. It had a room safe, a quiet, cold fridge, coffeemaker and, surprisingly, a microwave. All were hidden away. The room was very clean, and there was no smell, musty or otherwise. It was a nice modern room, except for the little surprise of old, charming aspects and fixtures that caught my eye. The hotel is a treat for anyone who enjoys history, banks, and architecture. It has personality. It is situated for convenient, easy walking and public transportation. There is a 7 Eleven convenience store right next to it, an excellent Italian restaurant called Biga across the street that serves very tasty, woodfire oven pizza. Wonderful restaurants closeby. I felt safe walking around at day or night by myself, even late at night, and I was sensibly aware and at ease. I live in cities. Personally, it's definitely a lot cleaner and less congested than other urban areas in my travels, and quieter. It reminds me of downtown Portland and the French Quarter with a lot less people and a lot less noise. I am planning to stay here again. The rates were more reasonable than other big hotels, which is always a plus, and I will stay longer. I really enjoyed the people and found there were many places and events I would love to experience there. It was a short getaway...
Read moreI was absolutely delighted with my stay at the Downtown Courtyard by Marriott. The building itself is impeccable: unique, historical, and gleaming clean.
Our stay was first impacted in a positive manner from the extremely friendly front desk staff and the beautiful architecture of the interior. Making our way to our room we were greeted by every team member; even the cleaning staff was extremely welcoming (something I don't experience often). My husband and I enjoyed exploring the property and loved the history of the place. We took advantage of the free tour offered by the bellhop and thought that was a nice treat.
The central location made it convenient to sightsee without a car as well. We walked to the Santa Fe Depot, Harbor Dr. and the USS Midway, continued on through Seaport Village and the convention center, and ended up seeing a game at Petco Park. The next day we walked just a block and a half to a sightseeing trolley stop and took that to Coronado, Old Town, Balboa Park and Little Italy. Tip: if you are a local having a staycation, sign up for the hometown pass. By doing so, you'll receive 1 free trolley ticket when paying a full-price adult fare for a companion. Then use the coupons you receive to get a few freebies, like free taffy at the candy shop in Old Town.
Honestly, after all that, I was most impressed by the breakfast. I had booked this ahead of time as part of my rate, and expected the usual breakfast buffet. Imagine my surprise when it was table service and "real" menu options! The fruit was incredibly fresh and tasty and a normal American breakfast platter turned out to be downright delicious.
I used to be a travel agent, and if I still was, I would recommend this particular property to all clients staying...
