My wife and I stayed at the Moxy in the gaslamp area of San Diego. We viewed pictures of a few hotel options that were near a wedding we were in town for, and we both decided to try out the Moxy based on its updated rooms and great reviews.
I’m sad to say we had a much different experience than expected. First of all, we called ahead of time to request an early check in because we had to be at the wedding venue early but needed time to get dressed. The first person who picked up the phone said to call back the day of check in to request that. He then placed me on hold and another person picked up and I had to start over in terms of my request. Unfortunately this person (Drake) had a terrible attitude and said they would just have to see what’s available when we get in. Then on the day of check in, as I was told to, I called back to request an early check in and a room on a lower floor, and I got the same guy (Drake) with his snarky attitude and all said “yea yea I spoke to you yesterday. I gotchu man”. Real professional...
When we arrived, check in was very confusing. We walked in through what looked like the bar area and up a set of stairs in the back. We quickly turned back around and went back to the entrance. There is a little cart that reads “check in to check out”. We read that but were still a bit confused.
We decided to ask the bartender where we check in and without speaking a word, he dead looked us in the face and did a slow point to the other side of the bar as if we were the dumbest people he had ever seen. We have never stayed at a Moxy hotel before so we had no idea that checking in at the bar was the procedure. On the other side of the bar were 2 laptop computers. We tried to make light of the situation and joked about how we couldn’t figure out where to check in, but the bartender said that there is a sign in front that clearly points over there in the snarkiest and most condescending voice he could muster up. We didn’t know that checking in at a Moxy hotel came with a “too cool bartender” attitude... We would have left immediately and gotten a room at the Ramada across the street if we had not been in a time crunch to make the wedding we were attending. I asked if his name was Drake, and he said yes. Lucky us... Call me old fashioned but Drake was wearing a baseball cap as well, and if your bartenders are front desk agents as well, shouldn’t there be some sort...
Read moreI had a deeply upsetting and traumatic experience at this hotel.
From the moment I checked in, things started going wrong. The AC in my room was broken and extremely loud, I couldn’t turn it off. I reported it on the first day, but nothing was done, and the noise only got worse. I barely slept that night.
The following night, the issue still wasn’t fixed. Thankfully, a kind female manager offered to move me to another room at midnight. It was inconvenient, but I agreed. I didn’t bring all of my belongings because I was told the AC would be fixed in the morning.
But what happened the next morning was far worse.
After breakfast, I returned to my original room to shower and get my things, and while I was coming out of the shower, a man entered my room without knocking or announcing himself. I was alone, undressed, and completely shocked. As a woman traveling by herself, this was absolutely terrifying.
Minutes later, I received a call in the room from a manager named Luis, who aggressively asked, “Are you in that room or the other room?!” He didn’t apologize or show any concern. I was visibly shaken, trying to explain what had just happened, but he kept interrupting and speaking to me rudely, repeating, “I asked a simple question!” as if I had done something wrong.
I was so distressed by how he spoke to me, with no empathy or professionalism, that I ended up crying and having a panic attack.
When I went downstairs to speak with him in person, he continued to be extremely rude, again blaming me as if I had caused the situation. While some of the other managers were kind, Luis’s behavior completely ruined my trip. I felt unsafe, disrespected, and truly shaken.
On top of all of that, I was told that rooms are cleaned every other day unless you specifically request daily cleaning, which I did, but no one ever came to clean the room. Just another example of the poor communication and lack of basic service.
To make things worse, despite everything that happened, the hotel offered no real compensation for the stress, inconvenience, or violation of my privacy, just one breakfast voucher worth $15. That is absolutely not enough.
I no longer felt comfortable staying at the hotel, and the experience made me question traveling solo altogether. I will never return to this hotel and strongly caution other solo travelers, especially women, to think twice before...
