After a comfortable, pleasant train trip from L.A., we arrived at Gaslamp Plaza. Jennifer, the receptionist greeted us and asked for our names in order to check our reservations. I gave her the printed receipt from Expedia. One quick look at her computer screen, and Jennifer proclaimed in a very loud and annoyed tone that there were absolutely no rooms available. What followed was a lecture in an equally loud and annoyed tone on how we couldn't expect there to be a room ready since we arrived at 11:00 AM, which is check out, and check in was not until 4:00 PM, and the hotel needed hours to make up rooms and we would have to come back and how dare people think that the hotel could make up rooms more quickly, and more and more, and more. I was shocked at her inappropriate tone and lack of cordial customer service. A mere quiet explanation would have been sufficient. All we really wanted was to confirm that we had a room and perhaps leave our luggage in storage while we toured about. When neither my partner nor I responded to Jennifer's yelling, she softened a bit and said we could leave our luggage and return at 4:00, when our room would be ready. We left the luggage and went on our way, deciding that it would not be wise to go too far lest this bully of a receptionist deny us a room completely because we did not conform to her time frame. When we returned, there was a different receptionist at the desk of Gaslamp Plaza. Her name was Adrianna. Again, I gave her a copy of my reservation confirmation, and she began typing furiously grimacing at her computer screen. She then said that it would be another 30 minutes to confirm the room was ready and that we would have to wait in the lobby. I asked if there was a problem with the reservation. She responded, "No! I just need to find a room for you!" (Loud tone, once again.) When I explained that our reservation was for a sweet with a queen bed and sofa, I was interrupted abruptly with, "Those rooms are all taken!" We sat in the lobby, again in shock at the poor reception and lack of any front desk efficiency. After 36 minutes, Adrianna called us to the desk and told us that it would be a couple of minutes before the housemaid could confirm that the room was ready. Meanwhile, she would check us in. She asked for a credit card to be put on hold for incidental purchases. I am quite use to this practice at large hotels that house restaurants, shops, and other amenities, but knowing that this was somewhat of a boutique hotel with none of these offerings, I asked what incidentals could there be? Adrianna exploded into a tirade of hotel policy exclamations about parking, then Jennifer chimed in from a desk in the rear screaming even more loudly that we had to agree with these policies or...... at which time my partner spoke up to say, "You both don't have to scream at him. That's rude!" At this intervention, the two harpies cum receptionists went mum. Adrianna gave us our card keys and we were off to the third floor to claim our room. When we got to our room (304) we were completely disappointed. The room was so small, my cat would have had a difficult time getting comfortable. It was a horrible experience I do not...
Read moreThis is our favorite Hotel Suite. Second time spending with my family for a week and always with the greatest memories! Was given the same suite like before and our kids were so happy;) . It's a home away from home for everyone. This place has the most welcoming, super cheerful, hospitable and so accommodating staff . Thank you so much Ms Madeliene and Sean ( Congrats on your well deserved promotion!) . You started our trip well by securing our same room request. Sean , we also appreciated your telling us about the Padres and Giants opening night there. We loved baseball. PetCo Park was beautiful with playground and open grassy areas for kids. It also had a lot of beer choices inside! SD people were friendly . PetCo park was also conveniently close to your hotel so we just walked. No wonder all of us had a blast while dressed on our Giants' uniforms!!! Mary, Jennifer, Adriana, Art, Chichi , Ariel and Carlo were the best in customer service at the front desk ( You were all awesome and always go above and beyond)! . Yesena, thanks for making our suite clean and well stuffed with towels and amenities. There was the trust because nothing was lost ever during our 2 stays there. Martha and Angela, thanks for greeting us so warmly every morning when we had our roof top yummy breakfasts. The oranges and apples were so fresh and sweet. Yogurt were good and breads were fresh. Appreciation to the supervisor in charge of ordering quality food (even when we have not met you during our stay, you were a great asset). The bell men were all fast, careful, professional, trustworthy and very friendly. The discount coupons you gave to nearby restaurants were great. There were a lot of places in your lists that were good choices for food and dining ambience . Almost all on your dining list werecarefully chosen and were kid friendly. We would not have discovered them if not for your discounts. Your place was strategically and centrally located in downtown Gaslamp district. Even going to groceries to get milk and ice cream were easy. You were all great people and great resource! What a great team you have in the hotel business Our memories for our birthdays and wedding anniversary were so beautiful because you were a part of it and you made it so special! Read moreAfter staying at the Hilton La Jolla Torrey Pines (which cost twice as much) for work, I moved here to be in a more interesting locale. I’m so glad I did! Yes, the hotel and its furnishings are old. If you don’t like that sort of charm, you might not like this. But if you like to be able to use public transit or walk to Balboa Park, the zoo, Seaport Village, Gaslamp’s nightlife, and other attractions, this is a great value for your buck. The staff are nice and seem to be proud of where they work. ||The room is SMALL but was fine for me as a solo traveler. The window was directly next to another building, so natural light was extremely limited. Since there was no luggage rack, I used the full-size ironing board to set luggage on, which worked out great! As another reviewer recommended, I requested a room that did not face the street to avoid noise from the dance clubs on 5th Avenue closeby. I definitely recommend that, as even on a Wednesday night, they were LOUD, but I heard nothing in my room 306. The bed was firm, which was fine for me. As someone who gets too hot in most beds, I appreciated that there weren’t a bunch of heavy covers on this one. Note that it is right up against the wall. The shower was a bit weak and towels a bit rough, but that’s not a big deal for me. I care more about quiet and location.||I was pleasantly surprised to have a small kitchenette equipped not only with a mini fridge and microwave but also dishes, utensils, a cutting board, and a few other items (no stove). Be sure to check out the rooftop terrace for great views of the Gaslamp Quarter and all of downtown! I also loved that the Shout House dueling pianos bar was only a few blocks away, where they put on a top notch show, which has no cover on...
