Casa del Rey – Where My Kid Fell in Love with Beans, Cheese, and Life Itself Let me tell you about the moment my kid took a bite of the quesadilla at Casa del Rey in San Dimas and looked like he just discovered the meaning of existence. This wasn’t just lunch—this was a spiritual experience wrapped in a flour tortilla. We’re talking golden, cheesy quesadillas so good, my child stopped talking mid-sentence just to focus. That never happens. And then came the holy trinity: beans, rice, and cheese. Simple? Yes. Basic? Not even close. The beans were smooth enough to butter a tortilla with, the rice was fluffy like it was trained by clouds, and the melted cheese… let’s just say, if happiness had a texture, that was it. Now let’s talk atmosphere. Casa del Rey is the kind of place that feels like your abuelita decorated it in the ’70s and never stopped adding flair—and I mean that in the best way possible. The colors are loud, the vibes are louder, and the service? Like you’re being welcomed home, but with chips and salsa instead of guilt trips. Bottom line: if your kid loves food, and you love food, and you enjoy a restaurant that doesn’t feel like a factory, Casa del Rey is your spot. Just don’t be surprised when your child starts asking to go back every weekend and tries to recreate their beans at home (spoiler: it won’t be the same).

Been wanting to try this place for a while since it is busy most of the time. I asked the waiter which of 2 dishes he recommended as it was my first time. Shredded beef taco and Chile relleno plate is what was recommended. I was hoping for a great experience but it just didn't happen. The chips were greasy and neither of the 2 salsas or chips had salt. The spicy salsa did have some decent heat but both were too tomatoey and lacking flavor. The plate was much smaller than I expected but it was packed to the rim of the plate. The refried beans were really good but that was about it. The rice was fluffy and okay. The shredded beef taco was big and crispy but the meat was lacking flavor. The Chile relleno was the biggest disappointment. Lots of batter and it appeared that they included a piece of American Cheese in the battered portion along with some kind of white cheese inside the chile. The sauce used over the Chile relleno seemed like pure tomato sauce again with no salt. The service was good and the ambiance is good for get togethers and the bar was well stocked. Feels like more of a place to go for drinks and social gatherings. Glad I at least gave it a shot.

My family are here on a Sunday evening. The wait was less than 5 minutes for our family of 6. The chips and salsa are very good and they are very generous with the chips. I ordered the beef flautas and they were probably the best flautas I have ever had. The chili relleno was delicious as well. The restaurant was pretty full so the wait time for our food was a little long, but nothing outrageous. Our bill was $155 for 5 adults and one child. So about $25 per person. Overall my family was on the fence about coming back. I myself will be back for the beef flautas and the chips and salsa. I also love when restaurants decorate for Christmas and this restaurant had a Christmas tree when you walk inside. Makes it very cozy.

Have been regulars here for nearly 3 decades, peobably longer. Had the worst service on our last visit and we don't plan to return. In speaking with the manager, it definitely came across as absolutely zero concern for our lack of attention.

We are by no means "hoity-toity" kind of people who expect the world, and honestly the experience started out great. Drinks were received (this included a specialty drink order and was prepared perfectly), and even our food orders were perfect and arrived piping hot.

That's when it went south. We were never checked on again. At all. Even attempting to flag anyone down--especially our waiter who seemed to have ample free time as he stood across the aisle and one table over chatting with the customers--nothing.

It's like we were suddenly completely invisible. No drink refills, didn't ask if we would like anything else (which we did and it would've boosted the check another $15-20), no asking if we needed to-go containers (we did), and the server couldn't even be bothered to actually come to the table to deliver the bill (which is also paid from the table), he literally reached his hand around the back of my husband's seat and pushed the tray onto the edge of the table so just his arm and face were visible as he did the reach. So, so odd. He was also nice enough to leave the check while we still had one plate 3/4 full and the other plate completely full.

A few minutes later the server was back chatting away with the table across the aisle (his back to us), leaving them their check with complete, friendly instructions that he will come for the card and check whenever they were ready and oh, did they want any boxes to go? (They did which he brought immediately and even went back to also get them bags.)

We waited for about 10 minutes after finishing our meals with zero sign of server and were finally able to flag a runner down for to-go boxes and took the check to the front. It was while waiting to speak to the manager that our server walked in the front door with his jacket on. He looked very perturbed as he huffed to the register and wordlessly grabbed our card and proceeded to run the payment.

As he was finishing up the manager made it up front to speak with us. All I can say for that interaction is absolutely zero "F's" given. She said any service after the food delivery was the responsibility of the runner/server helper. We explained that absolutely nobody checked (including her as she'd been someone we'd tried to flag down) and again, zero concern at all.

Sad as this had been a staple for decades and I'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt (short-staffing these days [which they didn’t seem to be], etc.), but it was clear that our business wasn't...

Have been eating at Casa for over 20 years. The one thing you could count on was they always stayed true to their menu. I couldn't tell you one item that's changed over the years. You knew that those flautas you ate there years ago were gonna be just as good today. There are a handful of wonderful servers that have been there since my first visit. And they never forget a face. Its a very nice feeling. I had a hard time with the star rating however, even though I have been a loyal customer for so many years. Here is why... I always ordered the house salad every single time I ate there. There have been 100s of times I ordered just that (and their amazing chips and salsa) to-go. There was nothing fancy or special about the salad itself. Just a pile of iceberg lettuce and a giant slice of tomato on top. The absolute best part of that salad was the BLUE CHEESE dressing they had. It was the best I have ever had anywhere EVER!!! I have gone in and ordered just the dressing to go many times! Half the time that was my entree. I think you get the point! It was to die for good ! a while back on a random weekly visit I ordered my usual and all it took was one bite to know the blue cheese was different. COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. It went from being the best to the worst over night...I didn't even finish my salad it was so bad. I asked the server what on earth happened. He said the place they were getting the dressing from before raised the prices so they stopped buying it from them. Are you kidding me??? After over 20 years you change it on me?? It may sound silly but to me it was devastating. I know i'm not alone. If they change the salsa on me I...

I really like the food at Casa del Rey, but my last experience is worth a 1 star review. We ordered takeout. When I got the order home one of the meals was completely wrong. I said "no beans" when I ordered and she even read the order back to me correctly, but apparently she put "all beans" into the computer. So the enchiladas were swimming in refried beans. (not hyperbole) This made the dish completely inedible for my wife, so I called them up and told them I needed them to fix it. No apologies for the error. I went back out to pick up the order. When I got there they handed me the food. I asked to confirm they got it right this time and the waitress shrugged and said, "I don't know, I wasn't in the kitchen." So I had to step aside and open the container to verify it looked OK. Which it did. Again, no apologies. As I started to walk out the door, someone told me to have a good night. I said, "you know, through this whole thing, not once did someone say I'm sorry or offer any form of compensation for my trouble and I think it's ridiculous." The woman said, "I don't know what happened." Rather than explain and have my food get cold at home, I left. They had my phone number and order information. Someone could have done something, literally anything. But not even an apology. It will be a challenge for me to ever return. There's too many good places to eat to bother going to a place that doesn't appreciate...
