I have been going to The Comstock since the time that it opened, since before I even lived in California. it is one of the best bars for cocktails that I have ever experienced. Everything they do is vintage, there are no novelty drinks with funny names, only classics and forgotten classics, and the all-important offering: The Barkeep's Whimsy, where in you can tell the bartender a mood, a favorite ingredient, a kind of drink you feel like you want, and they will come up with something for you. The atmosphere is classic Gilded Age San Francisco, with a little bit of Emperor Norton, but it's never too cute, never too twee. recently, a couple of the original bartenders have moved on, and I was worried that the experience would be lost. To the Comstock's credit those who now run the bar have maintained much of its personality, and all of its quality. it is still one of the best drinks in town, perhaps the best drink in town, if what you look for in a drink is quality. The food menu is a Hidden Gem, few people think of the Comstock as a place to eat, but I have never been disappointed by anything that they offer, and often been pleasantly surprised. Times change, but the Comstock seems to be weathering that critical transition between a beautifully rendered concept, and an established...

So I walk in to this place 45 minutes before closing. We hear the bartender sigh under his breath that he has another set of customers. He asks us what we'd like and we request the beer menu. Promptly after, he hands us the menu and does something else at the bar (before this point he has also pushed us to the end corner of the bar for the reason that someone was sitting at the spot we came up at, despite that spot being empty the whole time we were there) he leaves upstairs and never returns for the next 15 minutes. My only speculation from this is that he didn't want to serve us and just hoped we went away, which, we did.

If he did not wish to serve us, he could have simply said that he wasn't serving any more customers at this time, and I would have accepted that at that (we were turned away from another bar for a similar reason). Instead, the purpose of this review is to highlight how that didn't happen, and instead, how it was more akin to second class treatment.

I'm doubleminded about leaving this review to be honest. Part of me wants to let it go as something trivial, and part of me feels like this is something worth reporting on. If anything, I would simply like more closure on why that was the treatment I received, instead of a "sorry,...

Came here with friends on a Friday night (with a reservation) and was seated in a booth. LOVE LOVE LOVE the space! It's beautiful, makes me feel as if I'm in the 20s. Love the live set (a jazz band played on the well lit upper floor) -- come prepared with cash in order to tip... unfortunately no one in my party had any :(

Although I'm not much of a cocktail person, they have a great cocktail selection. Definitely a place to bring my girlfriends to when they visit. However I thought the food menu was just OK. it's probably seasonal so I didn't see some items I was interested in ordering after having checked reviews/photos on Yelp (eg, the bone marrow beef shank pot pie). So I opted fo the pigs in a biscuit -- yes the biscuits were just the right amount of buttery and the pork crispy, but the accompaniments weren't amazing (pickled salad and side of dijon-like mustard that I didn't think went well with the pork or biscuit) and the pork was oozing with grease down my fingers after every bite.

Overall, a great experience. Would highly recommend and will definitely be coming back! Thanks to my friends for introducing me to such a...

The vibe of the restaurant/bar uniquely really does resemble a saloon which was pretty neat. The review is fod the food only, as we had no cocktails or interesting beverages. We had made reservations ahead of time for brunch, but it was pretty empty when we first arrived at 11:30am - it filled up rather quickly! We ordered 5 items to share: 1) breakfast poutine - the gravy really makes the poutine! 2) ham and fontina croque madame - really enjoyed the crisp potatoes and perfectly delicious croque madame. 3) tres leches french toast - artfully presented and while visually stunning tasted much like what one would expect from french toast coated in condensed milk. It is still quite good. 4) charsiu-like pork benedict - probably our favorite from what we ordered, the Szechuan pepper gravy dripping over the bao-like fluffy bread that was stuffed with charsiu was divine. 5) shakshuka - the least favorite, the flavor was rather bland and unlively. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality and taste of the food. A solid 3.5~4 stars. I'm equally surprised that there was no queue streaming out the door at the establishment!
