Exploring North Beach for the first time, La Rocca's caught our eye with the sign for the $8 Irish Coffee. Although not quite unfriendly, the bartender did not seem super keen to acknowledge we had entered but did greet me and was friendly enough when I ordered the coffees.
For $8, the Irish Coffees are quite the steal. Having not had an Irish Coffee made in a bar before (just terrible teenage connections), I didn't know what to expect but was pleasantly surprised at how strong the drink was. The whisky flavor was super strong, but slightly hidden under the also strong coffee flavor. The whipped cream did provide some creaminess to offset the whisky flavor also.

Read moreI encountered the bar tender when I was nearby washing my cloth in a laundromat and ran out of my coins. And he kindly ran back to his truck to provide me with two quarters. That was really nice of him. In such an age, we need nice neighborhood folks like this. No matter how people hate America or it has its own imperfection, people like this always reminds me the good side of it. And he worked at the bar having fun with other local old folks. It just feels like old-day trustworthy. We need society and community like this. And the joke on the board up the shop outside is always funny. One time it said "wet dream force" when the Dream Force Conference was going on. It has funny-witty stuffs going on. Old neighborhood will notice it....

I asked if they were open and the bartender rudely said ‘you just walked through the open door, didn’t you?’ Rather than get into a back and forth with this rude individual, I chose to simply walk out.
I’ve been to enough bars and restaurants in San Francisco to know that it’s not uncommon for businesses to have their front door open before they open, while they’re preparing for the day (e.g., to air out the space, taking garbage out, putting out signage, etc).
