Is it possible to overdose on sausage? One fateful evening in SF, I found out that you can. Yes, you can. When the sausage is this flipping delicious, you most certainly can.
I believe the first time I went here was sometime back in '07. We were looking for some pre-lounge eats and heard about Roasmunde. We had a German tourist in tow with our small group, so I wanted to see how he'd like it, compared to the good sausage-based grub from his motherland. I ordered a knockwurst with sauerkraut and grilled onions. Oh man, that thing was delicious. That nice crispness on the outside and super juicy on the inside, complemented by brown mustard and the toppings. One of the best sausages i've had. The verdict of my German friend: just as authentic and really good.
Another evening, I went with a different friend. I wanted to introduce him to Rosamunde's and he also had a hankering for some Russian pastries. So first we hit up Geary St. for some Russian treats... some very greasy Russian treats. We even get our fill. But we decided that we're still (somehow) hungry.. so on to Rosamunde's we went. We ordered 4 sausages to share: merguez, duck, wild boar, and knockwurst. I then pigged out on a level that I have never ever pigged out since. It was ugly to say the least. I experienced more than a food coma afterwards. More like clinical death via food...
Yes, my friends, that's how good the sausages from here are. Although i'll never ever feast like a madman again (i've lost a considerable amount of weight since then), Rosamunde still remains one of my favorite spots for grub in SF. Please do yourself a favor and order a sausage... or...
Read moredo not order from the phone! i heard about their wait time so i called their main number to order ahead of time and pick up, only to show up on haight and get some very confused looks on their faces. apparently, they don't take orders over the phone. therefore, their phone system automatically switched me over to the mission store. totally not their fault, but i definitely know now to order on the spot.
after getting everything straightened out, i waited the standard 15ish minutes along with other standing people occupying the small space waiting for their own orders. man i was HUNGRYYY and practically inhaled the food. but it still didn't live up to the hype for me. we shared a wild boar, chicken, beer sausage, and andouille.
my favorite was definitely the beer sausage. it wasn't my first time having a boar "dish", and i'm not particularly crazy about this particular meat. everything was good but i've definitely had better hot dogs at top dog in berkeley and gray's papaya in new york. maybe i had high expectations, but we should have high expectations for all of our food! i'm not especially impressed, and i actually don't feel that the price is cheap enough for...
Read moreGood late-night food in the mission!! No I'm not talking about that place catty corner - el diaria-eato. Instead go to Rosa Munde and chow down on any of their super delicious sausages. Lamb with fennel, chicken with mushroom truffle, these are not hot dogs! I don't even like hot dogs. The bread is great and the sausages are slathered in fried onions. At $6.50 its priced as it is - upscale. I tried one of the specials and my friend rocked one of the classics - the beer sausage. Mine was better but both tasty. They even have Vegan options if you want your farts to smell terrible and make babies cry. And did i mention the beer list? It is dope! They have everything and its on tap. Again, they are priced upscale at $7-9 bucks a beer. But if you're just gonna have one, might as well make it good! The fries were good, but certainly not a necessity. Ladies: come earlier in the evening as a place this high class tends to close before the riff raff show up to hump your leg and vomit...
