I've been going to Tunnel Top for nearly 20 years now. I went to Tunnel Top because the bartenders at this establishment know their craft. Conveniently located in between several neighborhoods including Union Square, China Town and Nob Hill. But its been a minute (pre-covid) since I've gone due to the heightened crowds in the past few years that used to frequent it making it nearly impossible to get to the bar, grab a seat or have a conversation. But I must admit this last time I went it was like pre-migration (referring to the influx of people from other states). I was not only able to easily get to the bar but was able to find ample seating for 6.
Though I must say the host are still working their craft. Turning out excellent, balanced cocktails without the attitude. And their friendly conversation is a perfect accompaniment with the warm, homely feel of the wooden interior. This used to be my hidden little watering hole haven when I worked in the City. Maybe it'll return to it's obscurity days, giving space to true cocktail snobs (like me) wanting to escape the hustle...
Read moreShhh… This is a hidden gem for the locals. I almost don’t want to post a rating because I may not get in if too crowded. However, I’d be doing it a disservice if I didn’t. And in these times, everyone needs business. We absolutely love TTLB. Been coming here for years. It’s 2 levels, but small & quaint. The upstairs is cozy and lounge like. Which you will find as you make your way up a set of very narrow stairs to an open landing area of built-in cushion seating and 2-3 large coffee style tables. Along the side and front of the building upstairs, there are 2 people pub style seats overlooking downstairs. The downstairs is your typical wall bar with bar seating and a few pub tables. Like I said, “the space is very limited.” The kickback atmosphere, sometimes live but generally DJ music, employee’s, and chill vibe make this nostalgic neighborhood bar a favorite place to hangout solo or with...
Read moreThis place is very interesting. It's small, but still can hold quite a lot of people. There are two areas at the top for "table" service, and there are a few 2 person tables on that floor. There isn't much of a second floor really, because there is a giant bird cage suspended in the middle of the bar. Inside the cage is a mannequin holding an LV chainsaw. If that doesn't already tell you what type of bar this is, then I dont know what else to say.
The crowd was pretty mixed, definitely on the older side. And by older, I mean there was a dad there with his two sons who just stood around as their father tried to dance with a younger woman, about their age. It was weird. It was a weird sight to be seen.
I would say this is one of those places you stop by at the end of the night when you're already really drunk, or at the very beginning when you go for the cheap drinks. Even then, I hope you're...
