Kona's used to be a required stop anytime I was near SLO or could make up an excuse to come here from Ventura so when it closed a few years back, I was bummed. On a recent trip this past weekend, I was thrilled to see that they were again open and immediately built it into our schedule. We stopped by for lunch and while it looked different than I remembered, I couldn't have been happier that the overall feel was pretty much the same.
Same menu, sandwiches, etc so we dove in with our order. I asked for my sandwich with cibatta, tomatoes and sauerkraut and eagerly awaited it to arrive. They made it and when I unwrapped it at the table, it basically looked like a normal sandwich. The "cibatta" bread was white bread with none of the personality that cibatta should be packing but at least it had some flavor to it and it tasted fresh.
The tomatoes and sauerkraut were both left off and I saw on the menu on the wall that they did offer sprouts (maybe?) on that menu but not on the main menu on the wall. I was bummed about that because sprouts were the killer item that really made the sandwich in the past.
Summarize my experience to say that it's a decent sandwich at an expensive price (the price went up vs before). Watch them make your sandwich to make sure they make it how you want. I really wish I would have because they also loaded it up with enough mayo to choke a horse...and that's a lot of damn mayo!
I may come back just for old times sake but I sure was bummed at what they presented this...
Read moreMy family has been going to Kona's since 1992 and it sure had changed, even the owners! When Kona's first opened they had great customer service, highly energetic, attentive, and kinf staff. They also use to have really good wheat and white bread (yes so basic but so good). When we went yesterday the two girls working were not kind nor attentive, in fact they were the complete opposite. A little rude with hardly any interaction. I asked for the usual sandwich I've been getting for years and she proceeded to ask me what was in it. She said they don't go by numbers anymore and that those signs were just, "for display", even though they were right by the counter. Yes it's a college town but this is also my families hometown (4th generation and raising number 5 and 6) and I'd appreciate some respect from the out of town college students working in our community. Anyway the sandwich was ok but it's just not the same as it use to be. Will we go back? Maybe, but definitely hitting Benjamin Franklin's or High street Deli before. The prices of the sandwiches are a little ridiculous in my opinion as well, especially with sub...
Read moreTotally disappointed in our take out order. They need to hire people who actually care about a job or people who can read what is supposed to be on or off of an order. Online it states they have a specific coffee drink which they actually don't. Then didn't even notify us they didn't have the drink in stock. We ordered one of our sandwiches with all the sauces & fix in's on the side but unfortunately that wasn't done all the fix in's & sauces were on the sandwich. Which made the bread so soggy it was disgusting. Top it off we also ordered a tuna salad which looked like just 1 spoon of tuna was on the salad. We definitely won't waste our time or money on...
