Came in with high expectations for the place when it opened, our families love Sushi as a yearly treat and we grew up loving it and when we heard a new Sushi place was opening we went ahead and tried it out. We love asian/chinese foods and used to come to the old food store that used to be around the area before it's owner retired. Chow mein, beef and broccoli were our favorites and the lunch specials i remember always used to shine so when we heard it had been bought out and replaced with a sushi specialing store, we were excited. At first we were excited, fresh looking rows of fish stood out in a old location we had visited before. But as we went through, the service staff did seem to be ignoring us. There was only one other table at the time and i just thought perhaps they were busy. They continued to walk past us and we had to wave them down multiple times before they finally sighed out and came to us to put us at a table. We wanted to try a bit of everything, so we figured we'd try a wide variety and would buy a roll each and some egg drop soup. The soup was decent, but as i bit into the sushi it was appaling to chew the rice and find it stale and dry and the sushi rolls, for 7$ were tiny, about the size of a egg roll about as wide as a nickel with just a single tiny square the size of a bean in the middle, and nothing else. Worst of all, when you bit into the fish of the sushi itself, the texture was noticable dry and stale on one side and mushy on the other and wilted in the middle as if it had been a few days old wrinkling.
The staff noticably seemed to ignore us frequently to go out to the other table that had two people hollering out focusing solely on them. I mean for a sushi specializing place we had high hopes, or at least, to come with a special experience. For the price we don't try to be picky but it's not a high bar to say we were expecting a sushi place to serve as a fresh paragon for 'perfection' of sushi, not something that would make a week old dried Gas station's sushi roll look high end in comparison to the roll of dissapointment on a plate.
We weren't trying to be harsh, we waited for lots of opportunities, but every time throughout, the servers continued to ignore us even when they weren't busy and just standing at the counter. After 20 minutes of sitting down after we had eaten trying to pay to leave waving at them we got up. And had to ask for the check, afterwhich we figured we'd at least try something else to bring back home to bring something home. Once more we paid the sum, having to point at pictures multiple times to get a item ordered. When it arrived, and double checked the receipt after we got back we noticed that we had been charged for 4 items, but only had recieved 3 and had been charged two times seperately for a item that came in a two piece. The service actively seemed to avoid the customer reluctant to be there, and for the expertise of a store we came in high hopes, but instead spent most of it with stale food being ignored in leu of the other table.
On a sidenote, the old Mongolian beef from the location that used to be in the chinese restaurant that used to be here before, or at least in the Colonial square area still tastes the same and was a old favorite of ours we still enjoy, eerily similar, i wouldn't be surprised if they kept the same cook, but he knows what he's doing and we love his food. As for the new set, none of the new additions seemed to hold up to any bar and we ended up leaving feeling like it was just a disappointment for every dollar we spent here. Especially concerning later after hearing rumors about the health violations closing down the store and reading a article in the newspaper about a man who got tapeworms after eating a dodgy piece of (normally safe) sushi it really concerns me as well in hindsight looking back, since i try to hope the best but after thinking of this place i think i've lost my...
Read moreGood to great Sushi and other Asian cuisine is pretty much available anywhere... what we really look for is good service. Good to great service is very rare and can often make up for average food.
Upon entering Ichiban Sushi we were NOT greeted promptly even though they weren't busy. There were 3 sushi chefs yet only one waitress at five minutes after noon on Thursday 3/8/18. After a minute of standing around, wondering if we seat ourselves or wait, a young man did come seat us. He immediately took our drink order and returned with them promptly.
I wish I could say the experience after that was positive, but, unfortunately I cannot. There were three tables with people seated and one waitress. We waited 15 minutes to order, but we were never approached again. We assumed the other people had already been served, and were astonished when they finally had their order taken! They were there before us so who knows how ling they were waiting. We assumed that after taking their order she would take ours. No. She disappeared into the back. We then left and went to Water Moon sushi in Draper. Perfect dining experience! I'm writing this while relaxing after eating great food and experiencing awesome service.
But while reading these reviews on Ichiban, we discovered you had recently reopened after being forced to shut down with 30 health violations! The owner had responded to another reviewer saying they had addressed the issues... to that I say they were only addressed because you got caught. If you hadn't been caught, you'd still have RAW SEWAGE on the floors, food being stored in a broken walk-in at 46 degrees, and 28 OTHER VIOLATIONS! Do you not understand that people don't care if you fixed the problem, we care that YOU allowed conditions to be so disgusting without addressing them. We have no faith in your ability to provide quality food in a safe manner without being forced to by the health department!
We will NEVER be back. One star is too many.

Read moreReally interesting that my review for THIS location, along with every other negative review was suddenly moved to your location on 33rd south. Updating your address to remove bad reviews and starting a new business page aren't going to keep people like me from posting the truth. My original review still stands- even more so now that you were shut down because of the sewage problem I referred too.
"Sadly this place has gone down hill since it's opening. First- the bathroom. DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. It smells horrible and over the last year has gotten worse. You need to get the plumbing fixed. At our last visit your whole restaurant smelled of sewer. It's kind of hard to eat when the smell of sewer is so strong around you. Second, I can't eat deep fried anything. So, I asked to take out the tempura shrimp and substitute it with normal shrimp. I was charged $1. I am substituting one product, for the same product and you want to charge me a dollar for it? I could see if I was exchanging chicken for shrimp, but shrimp for shrimp? Come on! I am saving you money on batter and oil. Don't penalize me for it. Third the food just isn't as good as it used to be. I ordered a roll with fish eggs on it and I had like 2 eggs per piece. We used to come a few times a month, but until they fix the plumbing, and the service, we...
