I hate to be this type of customer - the two stars are for the amazing customer service alone. Each and every front of house staff was friendly, attentive, and when one server saw our food was taking a while she kindly offered a faster appetizer or some tea while we waited.
However the food was just not good at all. The seaweed salad tasted like it was drenched in sugar while the cucumbers were too salty, masking any natural flavor. Seaweed salad is one of my favorite foods ever but I just could barely eat this one. A server was kind enough to remove it from my bill.
My favorite part was my BBQ salmon skin roll, the salmon skin had a nice crunch though there was so little of it you almost couldn't see it... Mostly rice! It had some interesting vegetables that I liked too. If you are not hungry but like an interesting flavor and texture get this roll.
The worst was the two pieces of salmon nigiri sushi we got - the raw salmon smelled and tasted definitely off. This salmon would have tasted better cooked into the BBQ skin roll!! My friend made the mistake of eating the whole thing in one bite and I ate half of one but had a sick feeling after... It's not fresh.
The miso soup was good!
We ended up going to Safeway as we were not full and spent the same amount of money on the premade sushi there. That left us far...
Read moreFood I drove down here from the boring city of Hollister to try out the nabeyaki udon. I enjoyed a tasty hot bowl of delightful dashi-based broth with udon and seafood. The sad part was running out of that hot, delicious food.
Service The wait staff only cared about the initial interaction and the end of my time there, when I was finished with my food. The wait staff did not check on me during the middle portion of my meal. I go to restaurants, and I expect good service as part of the experience. Good food by itself does not mean full stars. Two stars for service are gone because they need to improve their service.
Atmosphere The restaurant is in a small strip mall. Behind the strip mall, the area looks rather run down. The strip mall itself was alright. As for the restaurant itself, it's your typical Japanese restaurant with some ink painting of Samarais hanging on one wall. There's nothing that really makes this place stand out as a "You've got to come here." In fact, from the outside it looks...
Read moreWorse sushi I’ve ever tasted in life! I’m from the east coast and I’ve been craving sushi for the first time in the last three months of me living here in the Monterey area. I tell you what, the reviews are deceiving. One thing I’ve learned since moving here is to look at the reviews for every restaurant that I decide to spend my hard earned money on because the restaurants are a hit or miss! By the reviews I was was sure I would get some great sushi. I ordered $40 worth of sushi and was disappointed to the point where I couldn’t even eat a quarter of it. I ordered my typical order: eel roll, volcano roll, and spicy tuna roll. How can you mess up that with the flavor? Also I always try to get an area specialty so I figured I’d try the Las Vegas roll. The Las Vegas roll was the most disgusting I couldn’t even eat two bites. The meat that sits on top of it and the salmon that’s wrapped around it smelled and didn’t sit well with my stomach. Everything...
