I’m so glad I broke my foot, because it led me to the best cup of coffee I’ve ever had, and permanently changed the trajectory of my life forever. Let me explain.
I visited the orthopedic center down the street after an eventful night out which ended in a broken bone. How the bone broke, I do not recall…
After my appointment I decided to hobble my way to the coffee shop for a pick-me-up which I literally needed. I was charmed by the lovely decor inside and out. I got a hemp milk latte. It took me back to my college days, the only other time and place I had ever been able to order a hemp milk latte! I knew then that I’d be coming back.
I decided to buy beans for my family before I drove back home to Montana for Christmas. I got my parents a bag of the Ethiopian because I knew they liked a light roast. I did not know then what I now know about Ethiopian coffee… I did not know anything about coffee, in fact, other than the fact that I enjoyed coffee that tasted burnt.
When I got home for Christmas and my dad opened up his beans and made me a cappuccino on his Rancilio Silvia with the Ethiopian coffee. And it blew me away. That was the best coffee I had ever had in my life.
That was the day my life changed forever.
I had to come back to A Muddy Cup. I had to buy more Ethiopian coffee. And… I made a decision. After years of debating on if spending the money was worth it… the time investment, the learning curve, the hundreds of dollars in accessories, the pretentiousness… I finally decided that yes… it was worth it.
I finally decided to buy my own espresso machine.
Thank you, A Muddy Cup. I will continue buying your beans in honor of my journey, from broken foot to the best cup of coffee in my life, to hopefully making myself the best coffee of my life every day, in your...
Read more"During a visit to the cafe at the above address on Tuesday, May 22nd, 2018, a guest was singled out and repeatedly asked to buy a drink, while other guests were not similarly treated. The proprietor of the cafe also threatened to confiscate the that person's computer if he didn't buy anything. The cafe operator was white, and every other person in the cafe was white, except for the person in question. I am not that person, but I was with him and we were waiting for a friend. The first time he was confronted, he asked for time to decide what to buy, and the proprietor left to go behind the counter. After about five minutes, I went to the restroom, at which point the proprietor returned to confront him again, citing the need to pay rent to support his purchase policy. Needless to say there were other guests at the cafe who had not bought something. We left after this second confrontation, before our friend had arrived. I had told the proprietor that he had made our experience unpleasant, to which he responded, "it wasn't me that made it unpleasant, it was him." The person in question pointed out that the proprietor had required the only nonwhite person in the cafe to buy something or leave. The proprietor then started cursing at us, saying "I'm not f--king racist." and "You take that f--king back." I would like to add that online reviews of this cafe demonstrate a pattern of such behavior with...
Read moreI truly believe every neighborhood has a special place that turns the neighborhood from a location to a community. I found a Muddy Cup when I was lost, and it quickly became my haven, my bastion of community, and some days, the only place that felt like home.
I have met friends, lovers, enemies, and so so so many dogs.
The kind staff everyone speaks of are the owners. They run their business as ethically as humanly possible. They're there every single day of the week to provide you with the best damn coffee in the area. And when I say the area, I mean the pacific north west. I think the only technically superior coffee might be Beware coffee in Tacoma, but those dudes are huge coffee science nerds and in the delivery of technically perfect coffee, they lose a lot of the humanity A Muddy Cup provides.
Look, if you're still reading this: go. go to a Muddy Cup. it's quaint, it's kitschy, it's nothing at all like Starbucks, outside of the consistency of product. Except this product is chosen and roasted in house weekly and the people there actually care about your well being.
Order a match latte, it's not on the menu and it's the best I've ever...
