Curses! Another lactose-intolerant dessert nightmare -- but how was I supposed to resist when I heard they had croissant-waffles (croffles)?!
Cafe Canuc (pronounced "can-U-C" -- which is good news because we've been patriotically singing, "OH CAFE CAN YOU SEE" every time we walk past) is officially open for business. It's easy to miss since it doesn't have a big sign and all of the windows are covered with opaque frosted glass film. But the inside is charming with French Cafe vibes.
When you enter, they invite you to scan the online menu. You can order online for pickup or takeout, but it is easier to just order at the register when you are ready.
The tempting croffle is a small puffy pastry with a firm outer shell and soft layered inside. I got the strawberry croffle, which was light and delicious. $7 felt a little bit pricy for the size, but you could tell a lot of care went into the presentation, and it was quite yummy, so I'd say it's worth it.
I also got the Colmar, which was a beverage with homemade strawberry jam in yogurt and sparkling water. That was also very small, but delicious. So, I'd recommend coming here for a fancy treat or cute date, but not if you're hungry or cheap.
Overall, it's a unique new dessert offering on the Ave, so I've got nothing to complain about. I'd bring a friend or date here for a short stop on a...
Read moreThe cafe has a very nice French country aesthetic and beautiful presentation of the food and drinks. I didn’t try the food yet, but I tried the crunchy oat latte with espresso. It was balanced, but I thought there was a little too much cereal in it. It was hard not to spill pieces. The coffee only comes in one size and I found it to be overpriced for what it is. Overall, the coffee was just okay, but not great.
My main piece of feedback for the café is to have menus inside the shop. Right now, you have to scan a QR code either on the door or at the register and it’s a really inefficient ordering process to scroll through your phone while in line and at the register to figure out what you want. I would still go back again and try another coffee and a pastry, but would really like to see...
Read moreThe staff had no idea what they were doing. I specifically asked about one of their cakes and they were clearly uninformed, and ultimately gave me the wrong information about the “black and pink” cake. I find it unacceptable for staff to be this ignorant of the items offered at their establishment. Furthermore, the restroom is apparently “out of service,” but there is no notice of any kind. This is not an “order to go” only place - their soufflé has an up to 30 min wait. And to not have a working restroom or proper notice is inconsiderable and just bad service. Overall this feels like an over-hyped place that is all around disappointing. There are so many other far superior cafes and bakeries in Seattle and the surrounding area. I will not be coming back or recommending this...
