🍴2021 Seattle Restaurant Week Fall Edition: Love You, But It's Complicated

We were welcomed as "Welcome to the beer museum", which is definitively true. If you're into craft beer, you would feel like a kid in a candy store. I could spend days reading all the materials on the wall. It may be challenging for some people, particularly if you are not into technology, do not live in the States, and do not have a lot of patience, to order food with QR codes. There is absolutely no service at this place. You must order and pay yourself. Getting water is your responsibility. It is necessary to conduct a scavenger hunt in the restaurant to locate the salt, pepper, or any other condiment since no one is around to serve you. If you have an issue with an order, as we did, you need to follow a couple of steps to solve it. I had to go back to the host station and they directed me to the bar. As my wife is eating alone, I had to walk around and explain the same thing to several people. Additionally, there is a problem with the operation. The management does not seem to understand the difference between "substituting" and "upgrading." They were offering an upgrade with a burger order with chowder soup. When I chose the upgrade, the order didn't come with fries. I was told that I was upgraded to a soup when I asked for fries. Consequently, they gave me soup instead of fries. I replied by saying that upgrading means keeping the same quality and adding more at a higher price. That's why you charged me an extra fee for soup. Changing a side with something else is called "substituting." After talking to a couple of people, I ended up getting an order of fries for $7.00. Meanwhile, my wife added salmon to her salad. They did not remove anything from her salad, and the salmon was excellent. Despite paying $7.00 for lousy fries, we paid $10 extra for a delicious salmon. There seems to be an issue with pricing. I suggest they look into it. If you go there and can convince the host, you should sit at the bar. Nonetheless, you will face challenges with the host, because she will do anything to make sure you are seated where she wants you to sit. We visited a few tables because it took the host a while to understand what we wanted, and we were willing to eat in a place we would enjoy. In short, no matter how fantastic your business is, it will not succeed without the right people. As we teach in the class, "Hospitality is about people."

This place is HUGE. It’s FANTASTIC, it’s managed by the BEST and brightest people in the world. The beer is WONDERFUL, the BEST beer in the ENTIRE world. You’re going to be AMAZED. If anyone tells you otherwise, it’s fake news... Weighing in at three stories tall, it’s located in the famous Pike Place Market neighborhood. The first floor is below street level, and then you head on up from there. Seriously, there is a LOT of space in this brewpub. It’s not just a brewery, it has two restaurants located within. Plenty of food to consume with your libations (although I must admit I saved my calories for the locally brewed beer). They offer the typical pub food (not bar food mind you, but PUB food - yes, there is a difference - pub food is a cut above bar food). They have burgers, salmon entrees, crab chowder, a few salads, and more. The other restaurant is an oyster bar called Tankard and Tun - I didn’t venture in there, so I can’t comment on it. So back to the brewpub. They have 12 beers on tap. 11 of them are brewed by Pike Brewing Company themselves, the other one is a rotating guest tap offering tasty suds from other local breweries. They also have two guest taps that offered ciders when I visited. Flights: they offer a flight of six 4 ounce tasters for $13-$15, depending on your selection. Four wines to choose from, two whiskey choices, ten house cocktails, and I’m sure any other cocktail you can think of is available. Tours include samples of Pike beer and a Pike pint glass. They are offered Saturday-Sunday 12-1pm, Wednesday-Sunday 3-4pm, and Wednesday-Saturday 6-7pm. $10 per person +21, free for ages 6-20. To sum it up, it’s a fun place to hang out. The vibe is really fun, and there is good music playing over their sound system. I’m going to go out on a limb and give them five solid stars based on my beer experience and the overall fun factor in this place. Remember, I did NOT eat here, so I can’t vouch for the food.

I do not recommend this place if you have a bigger party, which includes children. I will not be returning, and neither will my family who live in the area.

I visited my parents, and they recommended this place for dinner. So on Friday 7/14/23 at 5:30pm, I brought them, my nephews, and my family to eat.

The host took us to the top of the restaurant where we had a female server who had a bandana in her hair. She did not introduce herself and just served cups of water in front of every guest.

After a few minutes, she came back and asked us if we were ready to order. We said yes and started to give her our order, which consisted of entrees and starters. She then tells us she needs to start the order over because starters need to go in first. All restaurants I've been to the server introduce themselves, ask for drink orders, and then ask for starters. That was not the case here.

After getting the starters in she then proceeds to ask us what we wanted for our entrees and we had to let her know we wanted chowder or salads as substitutes multiple times as she did not offer these substitutes. After getting everyone's food order, we had to ask her if we could order drinks. She did not ask us or offer us other options other than water that was brought to the table.

We received our food there was an item that was not correct. That was a quick fix. My wife had asked for a salad instead of French fries. As we began to eat, the server NEVER returned to the table to ask how everything was. NEVER returned to the table to ask if we needed more water or any condiments.

When it was time to pay, she handed us the receipt and said here's your receipt and then proceeded to walk away. So we thought we had to pay at the front desk. We got up and waited at the register up front for a few seconds and saw her running down to us. Her words were exactly"I thought you guys were walking out on me. You were supposed to pay up there. " of she would have simply explained this to us we would have know that we had to pay at the table and not at the register up front.

Not only was the service horrible, but I thought this was a very unprofessional and rude remark to make to my family and my senior parents. Unfortunately for us we had a party of 10. Any group with a party of 8+ is charged an automatic 20% gratuity. I believe this is the reason we have bad service. Or maybe it was because we had a group with children. This server seemed to be very attentive to the other tables, but...

I had a truly bizarre experience at Pike Brewing. Our server was insanely rude to our group in the name of “humor”. My colleagues and I (group of 7) stopped in for an after work happy hour because we work a block away. Our visit started off by us asking if we could get the happy hour menu and our server telling us that because we chose to sit where “he does all the work” instead of the bar, we can’t do happy hour. Ok, that’s fine.

Then, two of my colleagues attempted to order non-alcoholic beverages and our server went on a tirade about how they’re a brewery, “do you think their brewers are going around thinking about how to accommodate all these non-alcohol people”, “obviously we don’t have kombucha”, etc. There are many breweries in Seattle that do have non-alcoholic beverages and even kombucha (believe it or not!). This felt particularly distasteful because you never know why someone doesn’t drink. Like people who are sober or pregnant still want to enjoy an outing with friends!!

It kept getting weirder. Our server berated us for ordering out of order and said we were making it difficult by not “doing it his way”. He did not make it clear that he had a specific system he wanted us to follow, which would have been easy but whatever. So he had us start over with our ordering.

Later on, our server called us out specifically by saying “your group just doesn’t get my humor, it’s going over your heads”. This was after he made fun of someone in our group for getting a player’s name wrong when talking about football (???).

He also told us not to fill out the survey at the end after paying because no one reads them. Cool cool.

It was funny for the first “joke” or two, but quickly turned our visit sour. None of us ordered food in order to avoid inconveniencing our rude server. We got one round of drinks and left. Definitely will not be back which is a shame because we frequently go out as a group and it really is a cool location.

Pros: the entire venue is wheelchair accessible, which is great! There are ramps to every level of seating and an elevator. That’s rare for downtown....
