The sandwich I got at this spot was one of their specialty ones - a New Yorker, which came with pastrami, coleslaw, and swiss cheese, on rye bread I did not like the sandwich very much
Maybe the only good part was the rye bread. It was grilled pretty well, having clear markings, and wasn't overly chewy or anything. The top was nice and crispy. The downside was everything else
The pastrami tasted exactly like pastrami slices you might just get at a grocery store. They were individual slices all of the same size and shape, all packed together at the top of the sandwich. There was a tiny bit of char going on the outer edges, but really not much I didn't taste any cheese at all. Either it was missing entirely or it was completely drowned out by the coleslaw.
Speaking of the coleslaw, it was all-time bad. The individual vegetables were a bit hard, but not the main issue. There was a ridiculous amount of mayo with this coleslaw that was honestly just far to excessive. All I tasted was mayo - maybe the slightest hint of lemon - but that was it It was so much that it took over any possible other flavor of the sandwich. This also resulted in the bottom of the bread getting pretty soggy from the wetness - also not enjoyable
For the price of around $15, both halves combine at around 400g, which is around average in terms of a lunch. It also took 20 minutes from the time I ordered to actually receive the food.
Overall, this is not a sandwich place I would...
Read moreThis sandwich was exactly as photographed, generously stuffed, slaw perfectly seasoned, thousand island dressing neither too wet or too dry. This is a delicious, hefty sandwich! Delicious, worth every penny! Now, if I show up at 7:30PM on a Monday and I am the only customer for a full 15 minutes, I use an automated kiosk to order while someone is behind the counter on his cell phone five feet from me, and I am asked if I want to leave a 22 or 25 or 28% tip, the answer is No. If you are resigned to the fact that the software is heavy-handed and expect nothing, or are constantly disappointed, do something about it. Say hello, make small talk, ask if I need something to go with it or wash it down. Thank me as I leave. The person who made it so well, and expertly wrapped it, put it down on the counter for the other person to bag it. Not one word was said by either. This is constructive feedback. I think the tip situation is out of control, but I am the first to tip very well when it is deserved. Tips should be rewards for merit, not tech-supported expectations. That all being said, I will go back, I highly recommend this deli! 5 stars...
Read moreThe Italian Hero sandwich here is made with a simpler list of ingredients than what's served at other shops, but it's tasty. The roll is toasted and crispy and not too bready, which is probably what makes the sandwich. It's filling, but not overly so. This shop seems like a study in deli merchandising. Compared to other sandwich shops it has a large assortment of bottled and canned drinks, and all sorts of candy. I'm not familiar with the Mike and Ike's and Laffy Taffy flavor catalogs but I would guess this shop has all of them. The selection of potato chips probably checks most everybody's boxes, and includes at least one unusual craft brand, but chips are not the predominate snack on display here. The obvious intention is to use every possible bit of space for displaying most any snack. Even a few hygiene items are on display. And considering that the shop is tidy and clean and doesn't feel cluttered...
