My friend was excited to try the dinner menu after having a great breakfast experience here. The dinner was terrible and complete waste of money. Their menu is small and we ordered 4 dishes so this gave us a good sample of their overall quality.
Charred asparagus The tips were completely burnt not charred. This could have been completely acceptable if they were not overcooked. The stalks were mushy and had no crispness. On top of this, there was hardly any seasoning. It was bland. The only source of any discernible amount of salt was from bits of chorizo. Their green goddess dressing had no flavor or seasoning. Cooking asparagus is not a difficult task for a professional chef. There is no excuse for this.
Cauliflower steak This is not a steak-i.e. a slab of cauliflower. It was a half head of cauliflower that was undercooked. Again, there is not enough seasoning throughout the dish. It was just blanched cauliflower without any seasoning. The salad on the side had kale and carrot. This was better than cauliflower itself. Again, one would think cooking cauliflower should be a simple task for a professional chef.
Halibut (basically same as the salmon dish) The fish was cooked well. It was flaky and soft, but again unevenly seasoned. I also donât think the green lentil and celeriac purĂ©e went well with fish. They were definitely better suited with our next dish pork chop. More on that later. The presentation not good. They had green liquid splashed at the bottom of the plate serving no purpose. It had no taste and no visual impact. Itâs probably the water that they used to overcook the asparagus.
Pork chop The pork chop was slightly undercooked, yet this was not juicy. The only saving grace was that of all the dishes, this is the one which was properly seasoned. The âcreamy harissaâ doesnât make any sense as it was not spicy. Itâs like chilly sauce that is not spicy. I couldnât taste pomegranate anywhere on the dish.
We spent over $80 per person. This is not money well spent. We would have cooked the dinner better for less money.
To the people at the kitchen Please taste the food before sending them out. No one seems to be checking for the seasoning. Please do not put parsley on top of everything. It doesnât go well with everything. Anything you put on the place must work together including the presentation. If you sauce is just there for color not for flavor, get rid of it. Teach people how to cook vegetables. This is a basic stuff.
To the people who are serving It would nice to hear from you about the menu. There was no explanation or recommendations. Plates and cutleries should be replaced promptly. Please donât leave dishes on the table. If you are not sure, please ask if we are done instead of piling up dishes...
Read moreAt a time where other restaurants are forcing service charges down your throat while offering sub-par service, Single Shot goes above and beyond without expecting more from its clients.
As a self-declared foodie and reformed (decade-long) yelp-elite reviewer, I have seen more than my fair share of restaurants. Many of them are good-enough, a few are quite terrible, and a tiny handful of them are spectacular. Single shot is everything I have hoped for and more.
I've lived in Capitol Hill for well over a decade and have many go-to spots and single shot has shot up my list of favorites. The food is consistently delicious, service is warm and friendly, and the ambiance is top-notch. The inside seating can be a little loud for my tastes, but I'm also sensitive to noise.
So why is single shot so good? Because they have unreasonable hospitality. At least twice now, they have gone well out of their way to make things right for me. I needed to have Tabasco with my loco moco. As a Hawaiian-born, it felt sacrilegious to use Cholula. They ran out to the corner store and bought a bottle when I refused the Cholula. My favorite dish wasn't available because they ran out of an ingredient. My face fell (I may have learned to keep my mouth shut, but my face has closed captions on in bold 24/7.) I ordered something else since I was with a group of friends, but Single Shot ran out to get what they needed so they could make it for me. And that's just for me.
The owner makes friends with the locals and greets them by name and asks about their lives. Servers recognize when people have special needs and does their best to accommodate. People with animals regularly come and hang out with their pups in the outside seating section, and team members regularly attend to the dog's water needs in between rushing around serving food.
I happily come back regularly and bring my friends and will continue to gladly tip for such awesome service. Thank you for being a shining example of what amazing service looks like.
They do get busy, so I highly recommend...
Read morePretty disappointing with the overall experience. Place is trendy and inviting. Greeted by Rory who was our server the limited time we had one attending the table.
Our reservation was at 645. We checked in at 630, invited to the bar and not sat until 7:20PM. Faith the bartender was great and then the only one who was able to offer friendly attentive service the entire night.
Rory is clearly a local favorite as he was personable with patrons whom he was aquatinted. What made this personalized touch disappointing was that we are not local and went ignored for some time prior to being furnished with a cracked glassware and dirty cutlery. He promptly cleared and replaced when we were able to flag another 10 min later when we could get his attention.
We ordered 4 plates. The asparagus which was delicious. The truffled stuffed pasta âagnolottiâ which was good but not worth the hype. We loved the flatbreadâ ordered based on the reviews â highly suggest with the prosciutto. The salmon as the main course left much to be desiredâ we were ecstatic to see the dish was accompanied by the Khohirabi purĂ©e- which was sorely disappointing. Our English peas were chilled and uncooked and salmon was underwhelming.
Rory and the other server were definitely friendly. It was clear they may have been short staffed. We were able to get things we needed from Faith at the bar. A drink. Sugar for the coffee. And the bill. With a menu boasting crafted meals with high caliber we would expect the service would match the accolade and price point. Sadly the only reason we. Would rate and not two was because of Faiths service. Even with a bar full of people she was friendly, offered us the additional needs we had to finish the two and a half hours, and would celebrate her ability to make great cocktails and...
