Nothing wrong about this place now but I think a lot of previous reviews have been in the past where the restaurant wasn't the most sanitary. Anyways, it's pretty average for teriyaki in that nothing is under average and nothing exceeds expectations. They're currently pretty understaffed so you might experience some wait, especially for placing an order. That being said, surprisingly my order came out pretty quick after I ordered.
Prices don't vary from your typical teriyaki in the $10-15 range and portions seem the same as well. I viewed some other pictures where people mention that they had large portions but I don't think that's true. Value is just average.
Location is amazing though. It's literally closest to the west side of campus as you enter the Ave. So that's one of the greatest things about this place, vicinity saves you a trek and food is relatively tasty.
I wanted a pork katsu and chicken katsu combo but I think the cashier misheard me. At first he said they don't sell it, but he could make it for an extra dollar. I was excited and all in. In the end, I'm a bit confused at what I received, but I'm pretty sure it was pork katsu and pork teriyaki. The teriyaki was harder to identify because of the teriyaki sauce, but it was darker and definitely didn't taste like chicken or beef. The katsu was pork, but visually I could've made a case for chicken.
While I'm happy with what I ate, I do wish that I got both katsus as that's what I was primarily craving. With this in mind though, it seems like you can request any sort of combination and they'd gladly make it for you, just know there may be an...
Read moreI WAS a regular customer. I continued to put up with their poor customer service for over two years because their kung pao chicken was the best I’ve ever had (it earns them that second star despite their horrible service), but after my most recent experience I’ll be taking my business to any of the countless other similar restaurants on the Ave. I ordered a combo and asked to substitute an item for another item of equivalent price and they refused. The employee asked her manager and the manager said that the only thing she was allowed to do was sell me the items separately, which would cost more AND I wouldn’t get any rice (that would cost extra as well). I’d always gotten the feeling they were trying to weasel more money out of rich college students (which I am not) but I never complained because I always got what I ordered (only if I paid with my Visa card though!) but that was the last straw. I walked out of my former favorite Asian restaurant for the last time and went to one of the other restaurants a block up the Ave and got EXACTLY what I had been trying to order at University Kitchen PLUS miso soup for less money than even the standard, à la carte option at...
Read moreI ordered the Broccoli Chicken. It came out very quickly, almost too fast perhaps. The sauce was gloopy and the other ingredients were extremely hot... As if it was all thrown together in a wok on super high heat with not even enough time to melt the sauce. The veggies seemed barely cooked. Not impressed today. I wish I could take my tip back (which you have to write on the credit card slip when paying up front)... When the girl sitting a couple seats away asked for a to-go box, the employee's response was "they're over there" rather than bringing one to her. What's the point of tipping if the only service provided is to bring you the food? You still have to scrape your dishes off into a gross compost bin just like in a cafeteria. I feel like a few simple changes could make this place a bit better, but I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for that to...
